Hi, sorry, I don't know if I'm blogging right or not. Have never done this. My husband put me up to it... ha ha.... We have a 1968 Shasta Compact and we're refurbishing it. He wants to make it higher off the ground because we will be doing some boondocking and some of the areas are a little bumpy and being close to the ground would not be a good thing. He saw that the leaf springs on a member's Compact that were on top of the axle and they had said that it was that way when you got it? Ours are on the bottom He really would like to switch them to the top making the trailer higher up off the ground. The problem is... there is a little hole on the bottom of the axle that a pin fits in from the top of the spring. If he switches the spring to the top, there is no hole on the top of the axle to put that pin in to connect to the spring. I sure hope I've interpreted this correctly. Will he have to drill a hole? Is it advisable? Read more: vintagetrailertalk.freeforums.net/thread/2938/leaf-springs-shasta-compact?page=3#ixzz4eXixjgXR

yes that hole locates the axle in it's proper position and helps to keep it there. It slides over the center bolt in the spring.

I had to edit my post. I got it backwards. The axle is now on the top of the springs. We want to flip them and put them on the bottom. The little hole is only on the bottom of the axle. It it advisable to drill a hole on the top of the axle to connect to the bottom of the spring to it?

I do not think I would drill the axle since it would be in the same place on the other side it would probably drill through and therefore weaken the axle. You might make a plate with a hole in it and then capture it with the U-bolts. You could weld some key-stock to that plate to keep it from shifting on the axle and springs.
