So, I'm rebuilding my dinettes tomorrow. (We'll be near 40 degrees tomorrow in northern Maine, time to celebrate by getting some work done). All of the photos I've seen show a plywood platform on top of the bench frames that the dinette cushions rest on top of. However, my '60 Airflyte had nothing like that when I received it. Did ALL campers originally have a platform that the dinette cushions sit atop, or did Shasta skimp here as well and just seat the dinette benches (which had a wood/spring innards) on top of the wooden framing without any ply on top?

Sprung seats didn't have the ply underneath because the wood seat frame supported the seat above. Many had slats that went from dinette to dinette. The slats often slipped into grooves cut in the dinettes. Top notches, if you will. There was usually a slightly higher front on each dinette to keep the seats from flopping during travel. Some also had a block screwed to the under side that prevented slipping off the dinette frame.
Foam cushions always need support. Some dinettes have cross sticks and thin ply and others have only thicker plywood.

Thank you vikx and mel.... that info helps tremendously. Mine closely resembles the photos from the old pro boards link. So my last question (I hope).... did the curbside bench have slider doors? The links don't show and whatever mine had were missing when I got her. I don't see any type of hardware or grooves or construction that would allow for slider doors?

My Deluxe had a door on the curb side dinette facing the other bench. It was hinged and dropped down rather than a slider. My experience with sliders on lower cabinets is that they "stick". Maybe more humidity closer to the floor, or lack of use? I would definitely frame for openings even if you don't do a door right away. Very easy to rout out the opening later...

My Airflyte has a big drawer under the curb side bench and a slider on the street side bench. The drawer looks like its constructed the same as the drawers in the kitchen only much bigger, it takes up the whole space. I dont have any photos of mine, its in a very hard spot to capture a photo of it.
