Keep us posted on this. I really like our FV in the teardrop, but yeah $170 buck ain't cheap (and it's constantly out of stock for the "vintage" one. If I could make something like this work well, I would definitely go that route. Our vent won't go up or down, but it looks pretty simple and should be something that I could fix once I get into it. I would look at the first one you posted, that second one definitly looks a little "weak". Having said that my wife likes the fan noise to sleep by, it drowns out everything else. The fantastic vent REALLY moves some air.

The fantastic vent REALLY moves some air. I agree on the fan choice. The second is what most modern RV owners replace with the Vortex. I've found a few folks on Facebook who claim to have done this...my only real worry is getting the crank to align correctly. I went ahead and bought the Vortex...am 80% convinced I can make it work. Should be here in a few weeks.

Fantastic Fan offers free parts on all but the Creative Breeze model. I've called them out of the blue for a replacement lid on a boxed Fantastic (5 years in storage) and they paid shipping to get me a new lid in 3 days...
NO QUESTIONS ASKED. Great company to deal with and reliable Fans.

I'm not building a rally queen, just trying to get something I can camp in.

Surely it's something that I can find a comperable fan motor model to online. If so, I bet there is a way to retrofit it in the old vent..hummmmmm......

I saw a lot of original hams this weekend at a rally, but I'd say 80% of the hams had original vents with no fans. I thought about a PC box fan and other small retrofits, but the Vortex is made to fit so im hopeful. I'm sure you could buy a $20 vent with fart fan and put the fan motor in your vent, but I think this might be more efficient.

Well, you get what you pay for. I bought a single speed vortex for $30. I got a vortex box with a vortex 2 fan that had a broken switch. Doesn't bother me too much since I had planned a pwm fan controller to reduce the battery drain from the load resistors they use to control speed. The fan has a gear moving device but the original crank location actually lines up with the holes. I will need to notch the plastic to fit up into the old vent enclosure, but I sort of expected that. Bein' cheap ain't easy, but this is a little more fun to me than polishing aluminum. I also like reusing as much of the old camper as I can...this vent is pretty stout.

Any updates on your install? I've purchased the same unit and I'm looking at how to retrofit it. My trailer is a mid 60's Shasta and the vent has 2 cranks opposite each other. The vent pops straight up instead of being hinged on one side...hope that makes sense? Any way I'm curious how much modifying you had to do and how it worked out.
Thanks-

Thanks- Sorry...I guess I posted the update in WDYDTYTT but not back here. I'm not familiar with the type of cranks you describe, so I'm a little worried you won't be able to access both due to the offset nature of this fan. If you can't use the entire assembly, there's a chance that you can remove the fan motor itself and mount it to the original vent crossmember, if that's not too hacky for you. Here is a blog post I wrote about the install. 1965fieldandstream.blogspot.com/2016/10/cheapskate-fan.htmlSome quick notes: 1. The fan fit very well with minimal modifications...only trimming the little fins on the edge a little to get it do fully seat against the rail that holds the crank mechanism. It is screwed through the sides using the 2 original screws that held the screen panel. I considered adding 2 more screws in the other edges, but it's very tight and solid. 2. As you can see, the crank alignment was my biggest issue. I was able to hack the relocating gears into an extender for the crank and it works well. Depending on where your crank hole is located, you may be able to use the gear assembly, hack it as I did, or use a piece of tubing as I probably should have. 3. I recently bought this PWM motor controller but haven't installed it. The speed adjustment in the Vortex (if you bought that model) uses large power resistors which will just waste battery capacity turning power into heat. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01H1W79S0/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=14. My gasket was a bit crusty and I couldn't find anything close enough from VTS or other suppliers. I eventually bought this very nice foam gasket material at Home Depot and it really seems to seal well. I will be using it on other seals as needed, such as the door. www.homedepot.com/p/Frost-King-E-O-5-16-in-x-1-4-in-x-17-ft-Black-EPDM-Cellular-Rubber-Weatherstrip-Tape-V25BK/202844545

We ended up with two fantastic fans. One for the bath room and one for the main area.

Looks like the circle fan park sticks down below the ceiling of the camper about 1 inch? is that correct?? the Compact ceiling height is so low my husband's head skims across the ceiling. But it could be ab option for my airflyte. Thanks for posting it up and Im glad it's working out well. Its nice to know there is a cheaper option.
