I have a 2001 Ford Explorer. The PO had a 5000lb hitch installed correctly and a 4 way plug installed at the same time at a RV place. No problems there BUT my Shasta has a 7-way plug and brakes. I know I will need a brake controller and have through research decided on the Tekonsha Prodigy P3. My question is how to I make it work and install a 7-way inlet to hook up my Shasta so that everything works including the brakes???

Hi. If you can afford to, I recommend having it done by a shop. It may require a plug wired in for the P3, and wires run to the rear of the tow vehicle, and a 7 way plug installed. I have done this several times, it's a lot of work, but you can do it yourself if you want to tackle it.

I agree. Also, do some thorough research about your Explorer's tow capacity and weigh the trailer. Some Explorers are not as able as others and have a not so nice history when towing. Better safe than sorry.

If you decide to install it yourself carefully read all of the instructions that came with the brake controller and them follow them exactly, No Short Cuts. The light wires are already at the four wire connector so all you have to do is install the brake control then connect all wires to the 7 terminal plug. If you want a power/charging wire you will also have to wire that. Remember to install proper fuse/breakers near the power source on the vehicle to protect against shorts, which can cause fires. also as you run wires to rear of vehicle make certain they are secured and protected from sharp edges that could wear through the insulation. This is a very doable project but you must follow all directions with no short cuts.
