Can anyone tell me if all Shastas were sold with wings, or was this an add-on item? Ads for the 1400 show wings, but mine don't have any.

Many were taken off and thrown away. But in the last several years many have been stolen.

Older Shastas did not have Wings. My 57 doesn't. Wings arrived in late 58/59 (pry a 59 model) and continued on into the 70s.

Wings were introduced in the space-age late 50's, originally when the Airflyte and the Deluxe were introduced, about 1958. They actually appeared on the Shastas after the Coachmen buyout in 1975. I've seen some models from the late 80's that had a plastic version of the wings still installed. They kinda faded out in the late 80's to early 90's, about the time the cookie-cutter plastic-fiberglass boxes took over the market. (Brochure from 1982.) They were standard equipment, but many were removed. Lately, the trend of refurbishing has built a large demand for them and they are pulled off and sold separately from the trailers.

That brochure is awesome! Thanks for sharing! I tried to buy a pair today off of a really rotten Shasta parked behind a shed. Sadly the neighbor said that the owners abandoned the whole property years ago and they didn't have any idea where the people were to sell them to me. So they sit there. Sigh.

Oddly, my 57 Deluxe had wings. I don't think they were original but there was no way to be sure...

No photos, but I from the road I think it's a Shasta Compact. It's really tiny. Painted white and pink. It's SO depressing.

I wonder if you could get the vin and have DMV run a check for the owners.

I've seen a 57 Airflyte with wings, but I suspect it was just a really early 1958 model year. Kind of like the Compact, 60 was the first official model year, but there are a few 59s still out there. When the Compacts changed to the toaster style in 64-65 there were still some of the Ham style ones left.

I know this thread is almost a year old, but was wondeing about the wings on a 68 Starflyte I'm looking at. The owner seems to think they are original, but looking at photos of other 68 Shasta starflytes, very few have wings. So were only a few made with wings or were these added on down the road somewhere?

All Shastas in '68 shipped with wings. As pointed out, many of them lost their wings along the way. In the 70's, the "space-age" influence was wearing off, and many were removed then, and after.
