Has anyone who has re-covered their own, or paid to have them professionally done by a reupholsterer know how much yardage is needed to recover a rear bed gaucho from a 1960 Shasta Airflyte? I have an opportunity to buy some perfect material at a great price, but need to know how much I need to be sure there's enough. Thanks in advance!!

Hm I did mine but I sure couldn't tell you the amount. It really wasn't that much though. I went with 2 different materials. One for the upper/lower parts and a different for the sides. I think it was around 4 or 5 yards though.

I think that should be plenty, but could be wrong. I am actually going to redo mine. I did them and then changed my mind on colors so they are too matching! I am probably going with a type of denim this time. Good luck and I think you will have enough. Didn't think about asking what the width was of what you are buying as that could make a big difference. Just assumed it was the wider deco/ upholstering type mat'l. My Mom was a seamstress and it handicapped me since she did all the sewing but before she passed she helped me learn the basics!

I believe it is an upholstery fabric as the girl who has it says it's very heavy weight, but good thinking, I hadn't thought to ask. I did take a sewing class once my senior year of high school, but I"m far from a seamstress!!

yeah I got better at it after 3 daughters and all the costumes, etc. Plus all the cushion recovers etc. but just as I am getting better the eyes don't want to cooperate anymore with threading needles, etc.

The upholsterer is using my original wooden frame and inner spring seats, but cleaning them up and using new foam and batting, and of course new material. I was hoping to do the gaucho myself to save some money. That said, my cushions were gone when I got my camper, so I'm hoping to source some used ones that someone doesn't want, or will have to also buy new foam.

In my airflyte I had those done by a boat upholstery guy and think he charged about 200.00. I had no gaucho either. I found an excellent deal on craigslist for a king size pc. of heavy duty foam that was in a case and very clean for 50.00 and then bought the topper. Hoping to find a deal on foam like that again. I did my dinette seats for my other camper and was surprised how easy they were and they turned out really nice. I followed Gone Kayaking's tutorial and it was a breeze. So I have already found good vinyl for the next2 sets, one I bartered working a day in a guys junk shop for and the other I found on craigslist and got the whole bolt for 35.00. Both were colors I wanted so worked out really good.

I thought about searching for foam on eBay, but I've read about how many different densities and quality levels there are and I'd be afraid of getting junk. ;(

I also believe you will have enough material if you buy the remainder of the bolt, with a bit left over. If you get it at a good price the difference with buying one yard less than the whole remainder will come back to haunt you when you start to think what small things, including bolsters or throw pillows you could have covered with that "little bit" you passed up buying. Also remember that if you get "very close" to not having enough, you might be able to succeed by reducing the thickness of the foam while still having the firmness you desire by increasing the density of the thinner foam chosen.

As it turns out she has 8.5 yards, so I'm going to buy it. If it turns out it's not enough, I can use a coordinating color on the bottom or something like that.

theresa when you determine the yardage that is needed, would you mind posting it here? I've been following this thread because I'm curious what's needed also. I'm not ready yet to get the sofa made, but I hope to be crossing that bridge soon. I think I have decided on my fabric, but I have no idea how much to order. Thank you!

I've heard anywhere from 6.5 to 8.5 yards. But I'll keep you posted!
