Just watching my husband and next-door neighbor as they paint our '61 Airflyte, Daisy Mae. We're using Majic tractor paint - International Harvester White (which matches the original top color almost perfectly) and "old" John Deere Yellow. I am very excited - what a transformation!

He used a $20 el-cheapo spray gun - which he says would probably cost $120 today. (He's obviously had it for a while. ) We did use hardener and thinner, both are sold right where the paint is sold, at TSC or Rural King. One bottle of hardener and one bottle of thinner per gallon, they mixed it in a bucket and poured into the sprayer. Cost about $90 to paint the entire trailer, one gallon of each color was enough for 5 or 6 coats! There are still some dents and dings, but boy, she sure looks purty now!

It's looking great! All vintage trailers have dings and dents. New ones too by the way LOL.

Wow, so many questions! I actually did the priming; the tractor paint only needs primer where there is bare metal, so it just took one spray can to do the entire trailer. It's the same brand primer as the paint, bought at the same place. We'd heard that tractor paint is very sturdy and doesn't ever need to be waxed, guess we will find that out. They have some nice choices of colors, just not as many as Rustoleum or automotive paint. I think it was a good trade-off, we're sure happy with the end result. And not a single drip or run on the entire trailer! The Z-stripe had never been painted, it was just the bare-naked aluminum. So we kept it that way, didn't even try to polish it. Made things easy, and I think it looks good that way. My smart husband came up with a good method: mask the z-stripe with Frog Tape, tape the plastic to it so it hangs downward, but then pull it up and secure it over the top half. That way you can spray the bottom first, let it dry, then simply drop the plastic back down over it and spray paint the top. Worked like a charm!

This is great stuff. I want to paint my Kenskill myself and I'm going to go ahead and check into tractor paint.

Hoosierpoet: Beautiful job!! Thanks for the great info. I had a lot of info from different posts on how to do this, but now that it's almost time to paint the compact, I can't find my notes. We have a large compressor so just need to buy or rent a gun and hopefully find a paint color close to what we want.
