So. Maybe someone can guide me on what to check. I am new to trailers with brakes. Our Shasta Conpact didn't have them. Our "new" 76 Apache does. I know they work (electro magnet drum style). I bought and installed a brake controller in my truck. My truck comes pre wired for it. Just plug and play. Our maiden voyage was in Feburary and at that time everything worked great. Adjusted the brake controller. It activated the brakes. No problems.
Just got back from a 1400 mile road trip with it. No trailer brakes for a single mile. So now. When the trailer is NOT plugged into the truck, the brake controller lights up and functions as it should from the drivers view. When you plug the trailer in, the brake controller no longer shows power or any brake activity/lights etc and the trailer brakes do not activate.
So it was working a few weeks ago. Now not. Only things I can think that have changed are that I reinstalled my kick panels under the dash again. I also think (as I write this i thought about this) that maybe my son flipped the 3 way switch on the inverter/converter in the trailer.
So the obvious (to me) route to go is to maybe flip the switch in the trailer inverter/converter and see if that has an effect. Not sure that it would/could.
Second option would be to drop the kick panels and make sure wires are intact? Seems like they should be though if the brake controller has power when no attached to trailer.
I'm wondering if there are any other issues that could be causing this (relay/fuse). TV is an 02 Trailblazer LTZ (Short wheel base). I have also had jumpy wipers and lost my low beams on the trip due to a dead relay. If alternator is putting out too much could that have effected the trucks ability to make the trailer brakes function?
Any advice welcome. Or confirmation on my assumptions/theories.

Maybe this should have been in the tow/wiring section? I'm not sure if it's a brake issue or wiring issue? Not sure. Sorry if this is the wrong section

Boy I really did get this in the wrong thread. Thought it was in the brake section. Technically this issue is either the truck, brake controller or trailer.
Not sure where it should have really been. Sigh. Sorry guys.

This sounds like there is something crossed up, shorted, or a bad ground. Most controllers that I have seen will not show anything when not connected to the trailer, so that the connection completes the circuit. Maybe something is pushing power across the controller. My guess is that it could be something "crushed" together under the kick panels, (maybe the "Plug" part of the "plug-and-play") or possibly in the wiring harness between the front and rear of the Trailblazer. Check your vehicle owners' manual too. There were a couple different fuses and relays related to the tow circuit in my '06 Silverado that I never would have known about if not for a perusal through the schematics in the manual.

I'll bet if you asked your local RV dealer, they'd be so impressed with your rig they would tell you what to look for, if not doing it for you for cheap.

I second the BAD GROUND. Clean and reattach both the vehicle and trailer grounds. WHEN IN DOUBT, GROUND IT AGAIN.

Have you peeked under the trailer to see if one of the old wires fell off the brakes?

I would start at the axle checking for power with controller applied/ brakes on if you have power there it is in the brakes themselves probably a bad ground if no power there start working toward controller till you find problem. The next most likely places is the trailer plug not transferring power, bad connection or broken wire.

To me the symptom of "the brake controller doesn't show anything when plugged in" sounds like a short -- drawing too much power through the controller.
