In regard to a couple of post: To my knowledge no automatic transmission will shift to a gear or stay in a gear beyond certain parameters unless it has been modified. As to gas prices everybody is glad the price of fuel is down, that is what severely wounded the RV and boat industry plus the sales of larger vehicles. It's not modifiefd, it's software controlled, Bill. Most people probably don't have a 9 speed tranny that has to be taken in for software updates periodically. It will also throw the tranny into "limp mode" if it malfunctions which locks it into a single gear allows you creep to safety or to repair shop. My best advice is for everyone to read their owners manual and do research specific to their vehicle.

My best advice is for everyone to read their owners manual and do research specific to their vehicle. Yes I know among all my other things I am an ASE master tech. All most all transmissions are computer controlled today. If you try to change gears to a position that will cause harm to the engine due to exceeding design limits. In other words if you were to put it in low gear and push the accelerator to the floor, at a certain point it would up shift on its own or the computer would limit engine speed. Also if you would try to down shift to a gear that would cause problems it wouldn't do it. But even your old non-computer controlled transmission had mechanical devices to prevent most mistakes. The modern computer controlled vehicle will go into limp mode for many different reasons, some will do it even if you purchase the wrong grade of fuel. But as someone stated earlier "you ain't seen nothing yet".

The other variable you didn't mention was which direction you were driving. Driving North gives you lower mileage than driving South, because you're going up the side of the planet.

We let it slide because you forgot to consider which direction the earth was spinning ... Important for east/west travel!

We let it slide because you forgot to consider which direction the earth was spinning ... Important for east/west travel! ...Especially when always chasing the sun....!

The most important thing to remember is you use less fuel going down river. Because rivers all flow down hill. Any good bicycle rider knows this, you plan your trip going up river and the trip back down river will be easier and that is good because you will have less energy going home.
