I am a new member and after much research on this site I seem to have settled on a Shasta as my trailer of choice. I really like the 1950-mid 60's style. I plan on rehabbing it to original and plan on keeping it for personal use. My question is what are some ways to locate such a trailer. Larry has already given me his advice but I would like to hear from other Shasta owners.

Thanks for the link. It is a little far for me to go but I could try ebay and look for something closer to home. I appreciate the help!

Welcome and good luck on your safari. We hope you bag a nice Shasta. Just to open up possibilities, there are other trailers of the same vintage that may look a lot like Shastas on the outside, and inside there is not a lot of variation in layouts for trailers of a certain size. Those with a 10 foot box are pretty much front kitchen large closet, rear table that makes the bed. The 12-13 foot boxes have a front dinette that turns into a bed, street side kitchen, rear bed or gaucho, small closet with fridge on the curb side, the old ham style ones (1956 and earlier) have that same layout with a fu ll time bed in back. Sometimes they will also have a h a mock or bunk. So if you don't see a Shasta, there might be something else for you out there.

I do prefer the 12-13 layout with front dinette. I'm just not as familiar with other brands but will check them out. I'm getting lot's of good feedback. really enjoying the group.

When I go fishin' for trailers I use "Searchtempest". Enter your Zip code, search "vintage campers" with as distant mileage as you realistically are willing to travel. When the first page stops loading at the bottom of the page there will be a box that says something like "Keep going until 10 cities with results found (May take a long time)" I look (2000 mile radius)just for fun almost every day, and often find good candidates for restoration. More often I find ridiculously overpriced crap that someone has ruined. Oh look, there's one now! odessa.craigslist.org/rvs/5422319736.html

Be warned about the Cardinals...the pre-1960 models had rather flimsy framework to them, and were known for bent and broken tongues, among other problems.

I agree on Cardinals; had two, a 58 and a 59. Both had rotten metal frames, bent tongues and more. The 58 received a new frame. It's a shame, because they are really hammy. A huge job and $$$ to replace a frame.

The 59 belongs to a close friend. He spent over $1500 on frame repairs and it's still not sound. The tongue is re-inforced and appears to be OK. When I was doing electrical work, drilling thru the frame outrigger for a ground bolt, it felt like drilling WOOD. Seriously. They're not using the trailer at the moment (still needs a build). Personally, I'd like to see it down to the ground and back up with decent undercarriage...
