Tow capacity for 2 WD = 5000 lbs.
Tow capacity for 4 WD = 6500 lbs.
I have a 4 WD but I don't drive around in 4 WD drive all the time and I don't use 4 WD on the highway to tow my 15' trailer. Does that mean my vehicle is 5000 lb. in 2 WD then 6500 lb. in 4 WD ?

I would assume that upgrade the components for the 4wd version, regardless of what mode you are in. I know it's that way for my Tacoma, except opposite... The off road springs they used are so soft that there is an active recall due to breaking springs puncturing gas tanks.

I think it's the beefiness of the frame/running gear that determines tow capacity in this case. My Z71 is rated higher than a 2 wheel drive model. The heavier the vehicle and long wheel base really makes them more stable on the road.
