Hi Friends,
i continue to to have some difficulty with unhitching my Scotsman.
Not once has has the hitchball dropped out easily. I raise the trailer tongue a bit and then get on my minivan bumper and jump and then it comes loose.
The trailer has been on the street since I got it, road crown is listing the trailer a bit which may have something to do with the issue.
i am wondering if it is supposed to take a 1 7/8 hitchball?
thanks,
Rod

I'm pretty sure all 60s Scottys came with a 2" ball receiver. Sounds to me like your problem is a sticky coupler (the shoe-horn shaped part)up inside the receiver. Spray the heck out of it with PB, but make sure and keep a rag or something under it so the PB doesn't drip into the street gutter as it is a pollutant, and for sure don't get it in your eyes. Rebuild kits are available for receivers, so you might take it by a trailer sales yard if spraying doesn't work; DIY rebuilding these can be a pain in the...

Many things could be causing this. Trailer not in a neutral position, rust, misalignment, or something bent. If the 2" ball goes in and latches it is the right size a 1 7/8 ball hitch won't accept a 2" ball unless it is severely worn to the point of being dangerous. I prefer my hitches adjusted up snug so they don't come loose while going down the highway. Most of the time I have to bounce the tow vehicle to separate them usually because they aren't in a neutral position (trailer pulling slight backward or forward). My advice is take your trailer to a experienced professional to be checked out before you cause yourself to have a serious problem/accident.

Did you determine if your hitch should be a 1 7/8" or a 2 " ? I just bought a 1966 Scotsman and was told it's a 1 7/8 but have hooked it up to a hitch yet.

Congrats.
I no longer own the trailer, but I can tell you that it took a 2" ball. When I bought it, I towed it over 200 miles back home with the 2" ball on my drawbar. Part of the issue I posted about was the road crowning. I will attribute the difficulty getting it off the ball as caused by that more than a fit issue.
There is a Scotsman user group on Yahoo. You can try there as well.
Got any pix?
Cheers,
Rod

Many people used a 1 7/8" ball in a 2" coupler but they are just a time bomb waiting full it to come loose going down the highway and causing a serious accident. Most 1 7/8 balls are only rated for 2000lb load which doesn't leave much of a safety margin, while 2" balls start at 3500 lb rating and go up.
