has anyone tried making a awning from rip stop nylon? or has seen them for sale on the internet

I think you'll find that Alibaba is the equivalent of our Amazon, in Asia.

As I understand it, you are correct. Still not sure I would be comfortable initially ordering from Al Capone.com, but maybe they can get me good deals on stuff that falls off the truck.

I've used alibaba and dhgate both with great success. I prefer to shop American stores and American made. But sometimes you have to stay in a budget and go for the cheapest product. Many of the companies on those sites will also do custom products. Just be sure that you are clear about shipping if you need something for a deadline. I once bought some party decorations that went through 9 countries to get to me!

I don't know much about sewing or cloth type materials. But I do know one thing. For many years our parachutes were made from Rip Stop Nylon and it doesn't do well when left out in the sun. The sun eats up nylon very quickly. We never left our parachutes out in the sun longer than it took to repack them for the next jump.
