I love the way your birch looks, what process/brands did you use on it?? and where did you buy your birch? Hi Mel, We got our birch from Bliffert Lumber in Wisconsin. They have around 6 or 7 stores.
We didn't go the traditional shellac route for our panels. We wanted a light-colored finish and we used a product from General Finishes called Enduro-Var Urethane Varnish. Here is a link to the product... generalfinishes.com/professional-products/water-base-topcoats-and-sanding-sealers/enduro-var#.VnK6U02FMdU
It was not difficult to apply. We tried various application processes and decided the foam roller was the easiest way to get a generous covering before it dried. It dries pretty fast so that was important. We've had it done for over 6 months now and have camped and see no negative affects yet.

Hey thats good! I tell you what, the friends on here have many amazing photos on this thread with ideas and layouts, and of course there's no one way to to do it. Lots of factors, this has remained our favorite, thus we tried to make it a reality and turned out good. Just need to make the support legs for the extending part.

Dunno if it's clever or not, by my plan is to copy a style of futon I saw. The rear wall and street side wall will have the "couches". The rear couch will slide forward in a hinged z-fold, making a queen-sized bed with the side couch, with the head on the street side wall. I may put a drawer under the sliding rear couch "seat" so I don't waste the space underneath.

Cool graphics cowcharge! Boy I wish I could do that, I have to build it first to see what it looks like. Haha. I like your idea too, that would give an even bigger bed than us. Are you using a futon mattress yourself? Because that's the only way we are gonna be able to easily transition from bed to couch like you. Do you also have a compact?

On our end, I have finally managed to get the supporting bar and legs that go on the moving section. Got that red cedar for next to nothing. Someone was selling twin bed frames cheap and I dismantled it and turned it into this. I love it. And very solid.

I would like to do something like yours with my compact, but I have the older style that doesnt have permanent legs, so I would like to figure out a way for it slide out like yours but then legs fold down.

Hmm. I don't know Mel how that would go, even my main part of the frame isn't original, all had been replaced or removed before I got it. So I guess for me that allowed for something different than the usual.
