Once you shellac the edge of ripped pieces you can't tell it's ply. I sand the edges a little to smooth it off.
The edges do tend to get a little darker.
The photo looks blown out red on the upload. I will try for a better photo tomorrow.
This camper is an odd one, every old panel is a slightly different shade when shellac is applied. Strange.

This one is birch. It's almost as if somebody put an extra coat of brown stain on a few panels. I'm sure there is a story behind it...like kids drew on the panels and they sanded and restained.

They probably did not use shellac if they restained. I think the order of finish work was shellac from the factory, polyurethane over the shellac at some point, a couple of panels were marked up so they sanded them down and stained. Or maybe it was stain with polyurethane followed by shellac followed by sanding and more stain in areas followed by who knows what... After 51 years I guess I'll never know. I sanded it all back down to raw wood but the stain is a royal pain.
