Wow that's really impressive! You were lucky to be able to remove your sides intact. Mine were so rotten I wouldn't have been able to do that without it completely falling apart--so much was already gone. I love the craftsmanship you exhibit in your work. It is well thought out and well executed. I like that it isn't too fancy--it's just beautiful. Did you use shellac--it has such a warm tone. Where did you get your window rock guard or did you make it? Thanks for posting this so us newbies can have a look. Hi Ronnie, I didn't remove the sides intact. The fact that the framing was so rotten was (and usually is) the reason for the rebuild. The intact framing you see in the pictures is the new stuff that I built to match the skin, as shown in the photo below. Fortunately for me, the original rock guard was still usable. I just cleaned it up and painted it. The paneling first got a coat of Minwax Pre-stain, then some Minwax English Oak stain, followed by a sprayed-on clear waterbase varnish. Minwax has one of those too. Finishing the plywood sheets prior to installation definitely made things easier. Good luck! Gary

That is some mighty fine workmanship Gary. I like seeing the grains of wood, every piece is uniquely different and the shellac/clear coat really brings it to life. The paint and mahogany looks nice too. A lesson in boat trivia, I now know the difference between port and starboard. LOL Thanks Marty, and yeah, the other trick is that "port" and "left" both have four letters... Street side and curb side (the side with the door) works too, as does driver side and passenger side. I like port and starboard because I don't have to visualize where the curb or tow-vehicle steering wheel are; I just face front and there's good old port, on my left.

Thanks for the info Gary. Minwax makes good products. I use them frequently when I build custom furniture. It would have been great to be able to use the skin as a template. I've got room but not that much room! The carport certainly has been handy. I've prefinished the panels prior to putting them up and it's been much easier. I'll probably brush another coat of shellac on just to be sure everything is even. I'm not great at posting pictures but I do post some every now and again!
