Sorry my post has a few typos. It should say that if you have sprung cushions a skilled upholsterer can retie them. Even one spring thats shot can be replaced.

I hesitate to mention it, because i don't want to detract from someone's business, & it's certainly not for the purist, but It's a cheap solution (& the foam we bought for our little mini semi-cab trailer conversion has held up well now for about 5 yrs), & not for the purist, but you can get a 4" thick slab of foam the exact shape of most camper couch/beds (completely folded down width & length) at Fred Meyer right now for $19, & if you get one of the pink ones, it's a good stiff foam that will hold up nicely. The white ones are great for a bed topper, & the green ones are in between the two in stiffness. That won't give you the vintage spring cushion look, but it may give an economical solution for anything less. Plus, if you are concerned about weight, these are very lightweight.

Oh, if we only had a Fred Meyers. Discovered Fred Meyers when I was stranded in Boise this time last year. Great store, redhed83402.

Hi Dk 81 I am the upholster. If you are going to bother redoing the seats I would recommend buying new materials as you will sit on them a lot and putting new fabric over smelly foam is not a guarantee it won't smell. Even if there is a layer of plastic. Suzy is right we use the plastic to help fit the cushions. A few thoughts on your project. -if a shop can't do piping I wouldn't give them my project. Every commercial machine has a piping foot. If he says he doesn't then he is making excuses and lacks skills. If you have sprung cushions now a skilled upholster can return them. Very seldom are they unfixable. Again if the upholster lacks the skills he may be pushing you onto something else. I would price out buying the foam wholesale online, plus buying the fabric or vinyl online and then get a labour price. Upholstered mark up all fabric by double what they paid. If they paid $10 a yard they charge you $20. I can't comment on sleeping in sprung seats as to comfort but if you are going to be sleeping on them don't scrimp on supplies. As to vinyl vs. fabric its personal preference. Vinyl is spill proof but sticky when hot to sit on. You can get a great Sunbrella fabric that is water resistant and scotch guard it too. Find someone skilled to do the work, cushions should be fat, and have no wrinkles. They should have 1-2 layers of Dacron fiber on top of the foam for fullness. Ask me any more questions you have Awesome, thanks for the advice! Know anywhere I can get sunbrella fabric for a great price?

I would do an online search to start. There are a few wholesalers online or places with reasonable prices. Try fabric.com to start and see what they are selling for and then keep searching. Put in Sunbrella wholesale into your search. It retails for around $25 a yard so if you can get it for $20-$15 it's a good price

Check to see what it would cost if you provide the material. Fabric.com has good prices. I bought upholstery fabric for 8.99 a yard shipped. I had a local guy do mine with piping and I had 7 cushions different sizes and he charged me $550. The cheapest material he had was $60 a yard.
