They weren't going anywhere before I took them off. The reason I say I destroyed the screws and spacers is because I had to cut the screws off.
I measured a wing. It is indeed 36" long from the longest point on each end. and 8 1/8" wide.

"The spacers look like a highway insurance claim waiting to happen. But I guess they don't go airborne at 55mph."
The spacers are required to allow them to set square with the trailer because of the J rail.

Thanks for the answers.
I would think they would catch the wind and take off (excuse the wing pun) with only a few wood screws into shaky 1x.
The length surprises me. 3 feet long wings on a 10 foot long camper. Funny.
I'm considering a set of Tyler wings. My wife isn't a fan of wings but I think they're fun.

WINGS are what Shastas are all about!
Unfortunately, the 57 twins weren't born with them...

I may as well keep them the original length, if you know it. Thanks. VIKX, I agree about wings. They are what makes Shasta special. Goofy, but special.

However, they are size 8 and I could only find 8's up to 2" at Lowe's. 10's were 2 1/2" but they are too fat for the holes. But they do have nylon spacers for both. Also, there are three of the 2 1/2" on the roundish end and then there was one on the point of the wing on the J-rail (I think), it may have been a 2" without a spacer. I should have taken a pic from the other end.

I guess with an existing hole it may be necessary to step up the size of the screw. I'm surprised 3 inch isn"t too long with a 3/4 inch spacer. I'll check out his site more closely.

You'd need the extra length with the 3/4" spacer but I would think the 3/4" spacer would make it stick out a little too far. Of course, 52 years ago, my old spacer might have been 3/4".

I just realized something about this older thread. As I consider wings or no wings I reread it. A 3 inch screw and 3/4 spacer with 3/4 inch wall framing? How wide is your wing? More than 1 1/2 inches? It doesn't appear that wide in the photos. On a side note, I wonder if they will be stolen at the first campground? There must be some reason most vintage campers no longer have their wings. The ones with the spacers seem especially easy to tear off. Decisions, decisions.

There must be some reason most vintage campers no longer have their wings. The ones with the spacers seem especially easy to tear off. Decisions, decisions. The reason most don't have them anymore is that back when they were manufactured with wings, the more modern campers were starting to be produced without wings and more box square looking. So the cool thing to make your old camper look more modern was to remove the wings to make it look like a newer camper. That way you weren't looking like you could only afford an older camper with wings. To keep up with the Jones' you had to ditch the wings. After ditching came pitching! Most were thrown away not stolen.

My wife agrees with the "out of date" view on wings. She would be in the "pull them off" group. I think they look cool.
Carriage bolts, an interesting idea. I wonder if the framing would need beefed up. Or if they sell such a thin, long carriage bolt?
