Hello fellow glampers,
I've used my 1959 Shasta Airflyte as a camper for 4 years. I love how I can hook 'er up and set out for a few days for local solitude. Recently though, I've been getting requests from friends to doll 'er up. I have the supplies, the knowledge, the skill... But I do not know how to have a party featuring Miss Susan. Shall I deck her out in my rural front yard with perennial flower garden, or take her out to a local campground for true glamping? Drinks and appetizers with fun hats or dresses? Has anyone done something like this?? Please share

Interesting ideas but I stay home and FIX them...
Your trailer is beautiful as is. Take her out and play but don't forget to camp and enjoy.

mcstemp I think you'll find that the majority of the folks here are restorers, and maybe even some campers, but very few glampers. I agree with vikx, just enjoy it, whatever form it takes. Glamping seems to be the new flavor of the month/year, but when that dies down, there will still be people out enjoying their campers, just have they have for 60+ years.

As nice as your Airflyte looks as is, this thought came to mind. Some people have beautiful little dogs, cute as can be, and then a friend asks what outfits do they have for their little dog. You can buy and put a glamorous outfit on a cute dog and have, I guess a Glog. Nice part about that is, after the Glogging is done, you can take the outfit off and get your cute dog back. Maybe you can set a small budget, and get some glam curtains, bed clothes and color coordinated accessories, pillows and table cloth to compliment your exterior paint scheme, to glam the Airflyte up from time to time, but when you are not fiddling with your glam friends, put that stuff away, and continue to enjoy what you have already, a great vintage Airflyte and straightforward camping. Putting a dress on from time to time does not mean you have to change your camper's name to Caitlyn.

Okay so I just can't shut up any more. Here is where it gets tricky for me, because I have to live with my own advice..."It's yours, do whatever you want with it". But the "52% Purist" in me is jumping up and down screaming like a child now.... I agree with what VB says, dress-up is fun...But I will doubtless be seen as taking on a very negative tack in terms of the subject overall....and I hope you will bear with me for a moment. I went back and re-read your first post to the board, the one where you asked what kind of gem you had gotten for a thousand bucks. First, a grand buys very little more than a two-year renovation and restoration in this market today. You stepped into a field full of horse manure and came out smelling like acres of roses...in my opinion. The little work that it actually took to become a quick-retreat getaway for you is amazing, a story we just don't read very often. Your description of what is still there is something that some folks slave for years to achieve. I have watched from afar for the last few years and seen some folks that have taken absolute rolling garbage and turn it into something that looks as though it could have just shipped from the factory. I've also seen some right-nice units that could have been as original as one could expect turn into something that resemble floral-lacey-pastel undergarments. And there is everything in between. I guess what I am getting at is to NOT structurally change anything about the camper itself... no paint or chalkboards or floral decals all over the cupboards. Dressing it up in a flower garden in your yard sounds like a real cool idea, and especially if you like to garden and grow flower beds...then it combines a couple different loving interests into one gorgeous project. Just leave it so it will pull out to run away easily! Changing out bedding and curtains, awning and props is a fairly simple matter too, and can give it a real "dolled" look and feel, without (dare I utter the word?) ruining the trailer. Follow your vision and your dream, but my opinion only is to try to keep the originality intact and not spoil what someone's impression will be of it 50 years from now... By the way, my thanks for this subject, as it has introduced two new terms to the lexicon this morning... "Tramping", and "Glog".....

Ok ... Time for an actual "Glamper" to speak up. I am a minority in this site but I take it with my chin up because I'm also into doing a very high quality restoration. If you want to Glamp up your trailer choose a Color or theme and add accessories, curtains and bedding in that colour. It's also great if you can get some true vintage accessories from the 50s and 60s as they are always a hit. I have invested several thousand dollars in true vintage accessories. As for a party, I like your idea of drinks and appetizers to show her off. Make up a mid century drink menu and set up cocktails on a tray with vintage glassware. Serve mid century appetizers like chips and dip in a vintage bowl, and any other vintage recipes you come up with. Dress in a 1950s dress with an apron... Have fun!! Ok fellow serious restorers... Just a heads up that the Lady Wendolyn is going to entertain you all with the same party just described at next years riverbend rally... It's looking like I'll be done by then. Please smile and enjoy my fantasy while at the same time noting that my restoration is era correct

First... Kudos to all for your thoughtful, insightful, and non-snarky answers. Folks like y'all are why we keep coming back to VTT.
Mcstemp: As both a dyed-in-the-wool backcountry camper and one who loves to entertain, I think you can have the best of both worlds. Unless you have like-minded girlfriends who are willing to get dusty, stay away from campgrounds.
Cutesy/girly: I don't know where you store your trailer, but you could pull it out on a pad of some kind, surround the door with potted perennials and put a few cute thrift/antique/junk store/garage sale tables and chairs outside. Cover them with vintage tablecloths and flowers in old containers or mason jars. Make some very simple slip covers for the cushions from vintage curtains or tablecloths - they don't have to match. If your current curtains are simple enough, all you have to do is make tiebacks with the left over fabric. Stitch up a couple coordinating throw pillows, and viola! It's not complicated or expensive, and it's all really easy to stow in a box in the garage for the bulk of the time that you aren't in your front yard glamping. Have everyone play dress-up and do up your food with tea and cakes and finger sandwiches. Nice and foofy-girly.
Classic - Leave Miss Susan just the way she is - you have done a beautiful job. If you think about mid-century modern, there was very little frill going on. A few simple green plants with a little contrasting red would be perfect next to Miss Susan. This would be a party where you could invite both boys and girls. Set out a long tables with a simple, sleek cloths for your cocktail fixings (and some mismatched martini glasses from the thrift store). Do 50s and 60s heavy hors d'ouvres and a simple, but elegant dessert (lots of ideas online and in your mother's old cookbooks), put out a few tiki torches or string some simple white lights. Request guests to dress in 1959 style.
Country: Same thing with cushion slipcovers, tablecloths, and curtain tiebacks, just with a cowgirl theme. Flowers can go into an old cowboy boot. Instead of big burgers, do sliders that you've glammed up a bit, make a campfire and roast fresh fruit, then later make smores. Everybody gets to wear her best cowgirl garb, and have a lasso-throwing contest when everyone is all loosened up.
I think it sounds like a blast. We are most decidedly NOT glampers, but what you're talking about isn't glamping, it's a party. It's not permanent - and shouldn't be, because I suspect that the novelty of this would wear out fairly quickly after one or two parties, especially if they're always the frilly kind.
As vintagebruce says, "You don't have to change the name to Caitlyn." You only live once, enjoy!

As they say "dance wit the one that brung ya" and do what ever makes you happy. If I don't like it I can always move to a different camp site.

Thank you Ten, I don't plan to change a single thing about my trailer and plan to keep her intact, as is. I wish I didn't, but I did give away the original curtains and tires. Other than that, she's all there. By dolling 'er up... I meant adding a tablecloth, putting up the awning and some lights, etc. Also glad that this post brought out your trailer passions....

Hamlet: love, Love, LOVE the ideas! You are right, it's a themed party, not a transformation of my gal. I'd be looking at a mix of the girly and Classic. I'll post a pic of the liquor suitcase I made for Miss Susan... Or should I say for my husband and I! Ten: please do not tell me that your glog is named Caitlyn! Ladywendolyn: great ideas and thank you, but several thousand dollars in accessories?!? I'd love to hang out with you!! Fancy!

My husband wishes that $1000s of dollars in accessories was an exaggeration ... But it's not. I have been collecting for a few years even before I found my camper, I am outfitting it like a retro museum on wheels and we are going to get a vintage toe vehicle and do car shows. Some people drink, some gamble, some go on multiple cruises... I collect retro accessories. I will be purging once my trailer is finished and dressed and bringing the extras to my first big rally.
