So we took out the mattress and box spring in our 1958 (no name for her yet) and to our amazement most of the musty smell is now gone.
We bought a new 3/4 full mattress but I'm having trouble finding a proper box spring for it. Anyone have any sources for me to check out?
Thanks!

you might try IKEA - they have some interesting low-profile substitutes for box springs. They're slats joined together to provide spring and support. And they're not expensive. What seems attractive for trailer use is there is no fabric/stuffing for critters to nest in.

Yea. Don't want the mattress on the floor because we want some storage underneath the bed. I would build a slat frame but our mattress is only 5 inches and firm so I want the box spring for better flex

I understand. I thought you were putting the mattress on a built in frame that was in the camper now.
It is amazing how much odor a mattress holds.

The first thing I did after buying both of our campers was go to a campground, rent a steam cleaner and steam the cushions. Two or three times. Most people toss the mattress before they even get home. Have you ever wondered why there are so many mattresses on the side of the road? Go to your garage and take a deep breath...now you know.

Ok, so I have been having trouble finding a 3/4 full box spring so i decided to refurbish the one that came with my trailer. I removed all of the fabric, foam pad, and (what looked like) straw padding from the top of it and stripped it to the bare wood and springs. Now I have to figure out what to use on top of the springs (I'm thinking cardborad and then a thin foam pad) and then how to make a cover for it. Anyone done this before and have some insight for me?! Here is what it looks like bare... (ignore the old mattress behind it)

Thanks for the input. I explored that option but my wife wants a bed.

That looks awesome! Great job on enclosing it ~ just out of curiosity (because a real bed sounds good to me too, but i couldn't figure out how to get one in) how do you get that into your camper? Does it fit through the door?

Does it fit through the door? Thanks! I definitely used more staples than a professional would, but it got the job done! It fits in the door and I first put it towards the dinette area until it is in the camper and then it takes some maneuvering to get it in the right spot. Once it is in I'll attach the legs to hold it up.
