I've got a 1958 17' Rainbow that's stayed in the family. My grandfather bought it new, sold it to my dad, we vacationed in it as kids, and he hauled it to some property in southwest Utah where it sat for 40 years. The dry air and cover from the weather kept it in remarkably good condition. We hauled it home to Arkansas in 2014, painted it original colors, and have put it back on the road. We're having a blast with it! History is chronicled at my blog, 1958rainbow.blogspot.com.

Great photos. Any photos of the inside you can share? I love this photo. It captured why I love vintage campers. Don't you love when a camp host says, "We have one small site nobody could fit in that's still open. But it's only 30 feet!"

Excellent photos. Your grandfather looked 6'6" tall. How did he sleep on the back bed?

Fabulous story and pics. Thank you for sharing. And we are suffering from a bad case of linoleum and Formica envy. The floor and countertops are just gorgeous!

Thank you all for the comments. We are having so much fun with this trailer, and every once in a while I get a "whiff" of "the trailer" or "Utah" and it floods my memories from childhood. NC, my Grandpa was a tall man, but I am 6'0" and sleep quite comfortably on that bed. Plus, that was a day when people seemed to be much more satisfied with far less. I can't imagine toting 4 kids around in this and calling it fun. But as a kid, we loved camping in the trailer and I still remember the joy and satisfaction Mom and Dad had. And we didn't even have a DVD player in the back seat ? - but my Dad was an early proponent of seat belts so I remember belting in the '59 and '64 Country Sedan's long before it was standard equipment. Just for memories, Mom and Dad took the big bed with my little sister, my older brother took the cot over the big bed, and my little brother and I got the dinette bed. Wow, hard to believe. By the way, the cot is still in excellent condition! I'm afraid to weight-test it!

All those people in that little camper. Amazing. Whenever people talk about a family camping in a canned ham it reminds me of one of those circus cars where all the clowns roll out. I recently saw a old photo of a family of four using an early 60s Shasta Compact. I guess one square foot of floor space for each person?

I recently saw a old photo of a family of four using an early 60s Shasta Compact. I guess one square foot of floor space for each person? It is a gentle reminder of how different times were then. Now, the trick is to get away from the kids and family.... I too remember sharing quite tight sleeping quarters as a youngster with cousins and friends. I sure couldn't stand to do that now! I am not sure to this day how my Grandpa ever put up with us......................
