Pulling a 1959 red and white SHASTA Airflyte! I remember seeing these whaen I was a kid - thought they were what all cars would look like in the "future." The funny thing is that 25 years later, AMC tried another futuristic looking car... remember the Gremlin? That one didn't go over too well either.

Hamlet I remember the Gremlin.. my ex had a purple one. I thought they were kind of cool back then. But do your remember the Pacer? It was an even bigger fail.

Pacer,Gremlin and more recently PT Cruiser. I always liked the fact that AMC seemed to have a different design concept. My Dad had a 1966 Rambler American convertible, it was a boxy, homely thing, but it was different than all the other stuff being offered at the time.

They stopped production of the PT Cruiser and did seem to be a fail but it does have a cult-like following. It will be one of those cars that will be collectable in 20 years because it was a fail. Another collectable fail, the Corvair. You probably remember this one but do you remember this - Corvair Pick up! And there was a van, too. Which brings me to share some more useless trivia. Auto manufacturers reuse names so that they don't have to license a new name, sometimes the vehicles have nothing in common with their true namesakes. But the best failed vehicle of the early 21st century was the Aztec. I would totally have one of those if someone gave it to me, especially if it had the tent in back. Yes, it was the original SUVtent. What sets it apart from the SUV tents that you can get for other vehices is that it was totally off ground tent camping. I even drew up my own plans to duplicate it for my SUV, and then I bought an SUV tent.

Since this thread was hijacked, here's the original vehicle that the post was about.

The Ultra does have a cult following. I think every one made has been documented as "out of service" or who owns all of them still viable as rebuildable or currently active.
SusieQ I've wanted a Corvair pick-up like that one pictured ever since they were first introduced!
When I lived in Valdez, Ak., Cabellas (sp?) had a tent camper that was designed to fit in and contour around a raised Jeep Cherokee rear hatch (circa 1990), that was completely off the ground and had a mosquito-net sided sitting room add-on (at extra cost). The part off the ground had a zip up "door", for privacy, while late night "relaxers" could sit in the netted porch before heading off to their campsites. I had one for my 2-door Jeep Sport and used it frequently whenever I drove up to the Gulkana River to fish for King Salmon or nearby lakes for rainbow and grayling..

Oh, that's cool about the Jeep Cherokee tent. Still kicking myself for not buying my brother's Cherokee before my SIL sold it, it was an early 20xx something. I'm check with my Jeeper friends and see if any of them have one and pics. My hubby really wants the new Wrangler Willys. I'm not sure he'll get it, but I know I'll be jealous if he does. I have to be the practical one, ya' know?

For those of you too young to remember the Gremlin, here it is! This was posted on TCT page today. It was taken in front of a refurbished gas station.
