Fantastic photos. I think the perfect project is one you can camp in while in progress. I'm going to be starting a 59 just like this next month. We can compare notes along the way. Welcome to the board Lucylou...

If things would have been the way I wanted them to be I would have been up there last week and probably still up there now. Stuff got in the way though. I used to live in the Owens Valley in Bishop. I have friends in Lone Pine, Independence, Big Pine, Bishop, Crowley, Mammoth and June Lake.... Looks like perfect weather. I know it get's a little warm up there but you can always escape up into the Sierras. Did you have any flooding problems?

It was perfect weather Mobiltec we were there from AUG 7-11 plus the added meteor showers after our long 22 hike to Whitney made it even better. Do you recommend any other nice campgrounds up that way. The Family really enjoyed the portal. Was thinking of heading to Bristle cone pines forest in a month or so. Have you camped up there before?

It would be much easier for me to try and figure out the few places I haven't camped in the Eastern Sierra, Owens Valley, the Whites and the Inyos. Go check out my you tube channel and my exploring pages. As far as camp grounds are concerned I am particular to the county and BLM sites. I really don't like the pay parks like Browns in Bishop. Just give me a spot where I can park my trailer or tent and have a campfire and I'm happy. North of Bishiop I like a place way up Pine Creek up in a crack in the Sierras. About 10 miles north of Bishop go left from 395 up Pine Creek Road. Go way past the little track of old homes and the school. There is a little paved road that drops down to the left just as you get up where it starts to flatten out near the end. It's only paved for about 30 feet. If you hit the Pack Trail place you went a little too far. Unimproved campsites all down that road along the creek. Tabby's ashes are there and the place is shown in lots of my videos and photos. It's BLM and unimproved so it's free. When you go to my Exploring Pages website, that photo at the top is Pine Creek. Horton Creek Campground is my favorite BLM campground up there. North of Bishop off the Round Valley Loop. Look it up for directions. That is another nice base camp and if there are fire restrictions you can't have fires accept in improved campgrounds like this one. So that's one of the reasons I go there a lot. Down around the Independence area there are a few that are nice. Goodale Campground is great and very close to Tinemehah reservoir which has great fishing. Also Tinemeha (sp) campground is good. I don't really like Diaz Lake because it is just kinda bland. But just south of there is Boulder Creek if you want a nice RV park. There is a Vintage Trailer rally there each year also. There is a camp ground at 168 and 395 in Big Pine also known as Westguard Pass which is a good location for going up to the Bristle Cone Pines areas and there are also campgrounds up there on the mountain that are spectacular. I think one is called Grand View Campground. Look it up. You will see them on the way up to the top of the Whites. Back down around Lone Pine there is also Tuttle Creek BLM Campground. Another great place with great fishing. Also from down that way you can go up Horse Shoe Meadows Rd off Lubkin Rd. to about 10,000 ft and camp at the top there. Really nice and it's close to the Pacific Crest Trail. By the way, that switch back road you go up to Horse Shoe Meadows on is the same road that they filmed the famous "Get rid of the rocks" scene going up that mountain near the end of "The Long Long Trailer". I know exactly where they filmed the scene where the back of the trailer sticks way out over the cliff and rocks come falling down. Dang I could go on and on and on. I used to live up there for a few years and have been vacationing up there for over 35 years now. www.cannedhamtrailers.com/exploringpages.htmwww.youtube.com/mobiltec

Thanks for all the good ideas Mobiltec , what dose BLM stand for? I'm not to up on all the camping terminology. We can't wait to head out again soon , we decided the original ice box was not keeping things cold long enough so I bought a sheet of 1" polyurethane board to reinsulate it. Hope this dose the trick. My mother is coming to visit in a couple weeks and she is going to stay in the shasta so we wanted everything in tip top working order for her visit from New Hampshire.

BLM is the bureau of land management. BLM campgrounds are run by the feds. They are usually $5 or $10 per night and are usually dry camp grounds with no hook ups. They have crappers and some have potable water here and there.
If you can't find a real block of ice those ice boxes will not work very well. Most stores now sell crushed ice that is pressed into a block and they don't work well. The added insulation will help a bit of course but there is nothing like a real refrigerator. You might want to think about upgrading to a Dometic.

So dose anyone know if the 59 Airflyte came with an option for a step? Or were they an upgrade? Or did they start putting them on in the 60's?

Just got back from our annual Yosemite /Sequoia trip. We ended up meeting our friends from Orange County who just recently bought a 1964 Airflyte at Azalea campground looks like we just started a yearly rally. Anyone else want to join next Year?

Were you ever in Maine, or did you just acquire a Maine plate?

My 1959 Airflyte has a step that looks like it is factory designed and installed. Fits exactly right in the space behind a frame cross member and the opening of the wheel well cutout.

The step was an optional item from the factory or dealer. They sometimes come up on E-bay. There are plain ones and some that are embossed with "Shasta" on the step. When these come up for sale the bidding goes crazy. I have steps on all of my Shasta's, but only have an embossed unit on one.
