I have constant trouble in a different area. I am a blond, petite woman, and very feminine. But I grew up helping my parents renovate houses, including everything from digging and pouring a basement, framing, drywall, plaster, finishing work, you name it. I am also a gifted cabinet maker. That being said, I constantly have men with no renovation skills try to rescue me, take the tools out of my hands, and take over what I am doing. Over the years I have learned to laugh. I know they are confused. I totally break the "dumb blond stereotype" I am one of the only women I know who likes to shop for tools more than my husband. That being said.. I decided when I took on my camper project, I am doing it alone. No male help unless I ask you to lift the fridge into place, or hold onto a big panel edge. I like it this way.. My wife drew up the plans for a small addition to our house. She hired the contractor and managed the budget and the schedule. Still, when we had a meeting, the guy would turn to address me. I do all the DIY stuff, but for this project, I just had to shrug my shoulders and tell him to ask the boss standing right next to me.

Well I've given up and I've actually realized after today that I enjoy working by myself much more anyhow. I keep forgetting that I'm retired and if I want to sleep in till 6am I can.

Today when I paid my helper/destroyer of parts off, he said I was too controlling... I guess I'm just supposed to sit back and hope he can read my mind on what I want done. Because telling him over and over doesn't seem to work.

Ladywendolyn,
Not really related, but I think you'll like it. Somewhere I saw a post about a woman who'd found a trailer and who's husband owned some kind of body shop or something. She had waited months to get a bay in the building to begin work on her trailer. Her biggest fear was that the "guys" would walk off with all of her newly purchased tools. So she painted 'em all pink and put them in a pink toolbelt, knowing that none of those (real) men would be seen with pink tools....I thought that was really smart & funny!

If I had to guess, the guy was in his 20s. I know that every generation thinks the next is a bunch of whiners, but I have never seen a more entitled, whiny group of folks than the interns we cycle through here at work. These are decent paying summer desk jobs, but this generation seems to both think they go straight from high school to the board room, and any work that interferes with hanging out is not worth doing. Hmm. The people I know with the biggest senses of entitlement are anywhere from their mid 40s to late 80s. I've hired folks in their 20s and early 30s with amazing work ethics, and had to let ones in their 50s go because they decided that just showing up should be enough. Go figure.

Sometimes even the "pros" don't do it right. After we had Hamlet reskinned (4 years ago), we kept him in our garage for a few years. Last year, we moved him to an RV park so I could use him as home base three or four nights a week. All was well until early autumn when I noticed the rear window leaking. Now we're seeing a little discoloration in the rear corners. Funny, it LOOKED like they did the putty correctly. Dang, now we will have to find time to pull him the 140 miles home and work OUTSIDE in Pacific NW rain to see if we can fix it. Or maybe just wait until Spring and hope it doesn't rot.

The guy is in his 40s. He is in my latest video trying to help me roll up a roof. I had to keep telling him to keep it round instead of putting the weight of his lazy arm on it and flattening it out. As I said, he says I'm too controlling. I don't know what to say to that other than here's your money and good bye. I guess I'm just a lousy boss always telling workers what to do.

He probably did do the putty correctly. Sun and weather damage putty. Also, if a trailer is sitting in cooler wet weather, a tiny gap can collect water. If it then freezes, the gap enlarges... as the process goes on, it becomes a leak. Trailers need maintenance and inspection; at least twice yearly. I know I'm shocked when there's a nasty space in putty that was great 6 months before... Bah Humbug. But then I love working on them!

As you well know, we don't have ANY of that wet, cold weather up here in the Pacific NW, so it must be some other cause for the leaking. Once we can get Hamlet home, we'll pull the tin and do the repairs. Don't mind doing them at all, just wish it could happen NOW.

Seriously, Lady...it really was you? Where did I see it? Yes it really was me... My husband has an auto dealership and I waited since last January to get my trailer in there. I covered all my tools with pink hockey tape and paint to keep the guys at the dealership from touching them. i think I wrote about it, on the thread called.."What did you do to your trailer today" , or on my glendale thread... i can't remember which...

I seldom bother to use the help I have living with me. I only call upon them if I absolutely have to have another hand. Let's see... SusieQ has a at least a husband and a son at home that I know of. I have three teenage boys at home and well, I can relate. Hmmmm.... If I ask for some help around here, I have to rush to dawn my white dentist coat. Then I grab my pliers and chase my boys to help with anything. Sheesh, it's like pulling teeth. Cheers Rod
