I tried a giant tarp tented on a rope that ran fore-and-aft over my trailer, but the wind shredded it. I ended up buying tarps that were 8 or 9 feet wide so they hung just over the edges of the roof about 6 inches, and zig-zagging light rope from grommet to frame all the way around. That way all the leakable parts were tarped but I could still get the door open.

That's actually way more affordable than I thought Actually I need to qualify that. I put in the gables and the tarp doors. So add about $235 more to that figure. I had to cover up the ends because in the winter the sun shines straight into the front of the building and also our rain goes sideways most of the time, again right into the front of the building. It's facing south.

How is the tarp secured across the top? Do you roll it up when you don't need it?

It's hanging from the grommets by screw hooks. I can unhook it and roll it to the side all the way which is easier than rolling it up. I plan on installing a track that will allow me to just slide it over like a shower curtain eventually. I can also extend the tarp out for more shade while working on the front. I had these front and rear tarps made custom by Tarps Direct. www.tarpsonline.com It doesn't cost that much more to have them made custom and I had them add more grommets spaced the way I want them.

Hey Larry,
Do you remember who you bought the carport from? Did you have to add the cross bracing that forms the gables for code?
Did you have to apply for permits to have it built? I am in a suburb of Los Angeles and I would imagine I would have more restrictions like permits than when you had yours put up. Since you were semi rural did you just put it up and never considered a permit?
Cheers,
Rod

Most people don't get them out here in the country but in some cities it may be harder to get away with? www.unitedcarports.com/
