I made the suggestion that someone send their Shasta vin to Ross and he would tell them when and where it was built. They messaged me back who is Ross they couldn't find him. That turned out to be a good question.

I messages him on here regarding my VIN but didn't hear back. Maybe he's not too active right now.

Back on the other board it was common that Ross was only able to be on certain times as his work schedule would allow him to be. Be patient. He will get with you and help answer questions, as soon as he is able, I am sure.

I contacted him via his website/email in October. He was very helpful! And he seems interested in keeping and adding to his database. www.woodnmirror.com

Ross' email is 'tearjerkers2004@yahoo.com'. His tear jerker group just had a rally beginning of this month, so he has probably been busy.

My Handy-Andy-Man just got back to me on a VIN number for the little Layton I'm considering. He says it was easy to find, atop the tongue in about 3/4" lettering. The number he provided doesn't look like it indicates a year or include any alpha characters. I've run the number provided through Virginia's abandoned vehicle check and it comes up with nothing. I could do a protential purchaser registration check but have not done so due to there being a cost whether you have the correct VIN or not. My questions: 1. Anyone with Layton travel trailer experience out there? 2. Is it usual to find the VIN atop the tongue vice on the side or a plate beneath? 3. Is it usual to find a VIN without alpha characters? 4. Is it usual to find a VIN without a year indicated? 5. Any other suggestions? I'll add pic or two of the trailer we're discussing. Thanks to any and all for... well, anything!

Well I'll give this a try; 1: I don't. 2: Yes 3: Yes 4: Yes 5: Yes; For year try looking on the following for a year indicated by 2 numbers; A; Back of mirror B; Back/side/bottom of sink C: front marker lenses D; side marker lenses E; tail light lenses F; tags on appliances etc... Looks to me to be between 63 and 68. Vin numbers are on all different places on different campers. Some do indicate year, most don't. Each company and even different factories of the same company had different procedures for vin numbers. One I had gotten one time somebody had titled it with a vin number that was actually the patent number of the hitch! LOL Good Luck!

Thanks Soup. All excellent ideas. Sadly we have yet to have the opportunity to sneak a look inside but hope to either this month or next. Handy-Andy has talked to the current owner who states he doesn't have a title. "I was given it since I already had one." (Huh? And that oen would be what and where?) Other than that we know little. Our problem has been scheduling meeting --'tis the season. In my case I'm on the road a lot and will be for the majority of December. I'm hoping Handy-Andy and owner can get together in my stead. I will pass along your suggestions on possible year locations and keep my fingers crossed. Thanks again.
Hellonwheels: just as long as you're not shirking or skulking you're good.

Now that's funny! I had to ask a a coworker what the heck that was after Paul McCartney, of all people, came out in support of Myley Cyrus. After learning the "meaning", some here may like you to tweak! Remember, one man's trash is a mother man's treasure... Or woman's!
