the whole reason I got a trailer was 'cause I didn't think a bear could "git" me, what with all that aluminum and stuff...nothing like flimsy tent canvas! Who here has had their trailer broken into by a bear, while they were in it? Raise your hands. |

A bear probably won't even come into camp while people are around. And if he comes in while you are asleep he will be nosing around making noise which will probably wake you and you can then scare him away. I've camped around bears and lived around bears in the Sierras my whole life and have only had a few run ins with them. But they WILL tear your trailer apart if you leave camp and leave any kind of food in it. Even a candy bar. Here are photos I took just as I was getting ready to set up camp. We decided to go to a local BLM camp site instead...     Not trying to scare anyone. Just be diligent if you camp in an area populated with bears. There is a drought on now and the bears will become more active coming down lower out of the mountains looking for food. If you don't believe me it's no skin off my trailer. No… I definitely believe you! When I was younger I used to practically set up camp with bears in the Adirondacks. At night, we'd hang our food and waste over a high limb away from camp. We'd sleep in open lean-to's with a pot and pan within arms reach for the inevitable nocturnal visit. But back then, there were fewer people spending time in the woods and the bears were more fearful and cautious around human visitors. I always found the raccoons to be more mischievous and destructive than the bears anyway. I would think now, the lesser visited and more remote locations would be a better bet for avoiding the human-presence-adapted bear (along with all the precautions mentioned in this thread.) But in the west, drought conditions seem to be making the bears a bit more desperate. |

When I was a child we were camping in Yellowstone when a bear came walking up, picked up a giant cooler, and threw it against a tree. I'm talking about a multi-family, giant, one man could barely lift it, cooler. He tossed it like a beach ball to get it open. Should have used the latch.
Recently we were camping in the Blue Ridge mountains and ran into another brave beast. I had a small table next to my chair with chips and dip on it as we sat by the fire. My wife gasped as a raccoon reach up, one foot from me, for some chips. No dip. Diet I guess.
So it happens. Part of the fun of the great outdoors.

The raccoons are definitely the worst of all. I hate those critters. They get into everything and they are hard to talk into leaving. It's for that reason that I don't camp in heavily used parts of the rivers. I go where people normally DON'T go and I'm fine.

Isn't there a breed of dog that hunts bears? If so buy a half dozen of them and they can eat the bears. Personally I have been face to face with a momma Grizzly and a huge Diamond back rattler and if I never see either again it will be to soon.

Speaking of unwanted critters and varmints in your trailer, always keep your screen door closed. Everything and anything can sneak in when you aren't looking. Snakes included. I've had a bird or two fly in and they beat the heck outta themselves trying to fly back out. Not a pretty sight. You don't want a skunk wandering in and then you walk in and trap it in the corner. You won't win that one. Keep the screen door closed...  |
