While camping this weekend, I was thinking of alternatives to our little portable fire pit, which is barely sufficient for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows, even when filled with charcoal. I saw a bumper mounted, swing out grill and I thought, BRILLIANT! Problem solved! Bring on the steak! But then I realized that really limits you as to where you can grill, and based on the layout of your campsite and where you want to park, it might not be the best place for the grill. But I also don't like the idea of putting an ashy grill in the trailer or tow beast, either. How do we feel about attaching things to the bumper? Is it frowned upon? And what are your portable fire-making solutions? We often stay at a site that does not have a fire ring.

After wanting, wanting, wanting, the littlest Little Green Egg, I wound up with an O-Grill that works just fine - it's lightweight and has a little carrying case that protects the grill (and anything around it). It folds up nicely, fits on a table top or you can buy the folding stand that comes with it - also very lightweight, so I opted for it, too. Not sure how well it would work for marshmallows, though.
The reason I opted for the O-Grill was because of how easily it folds up and transports.

Personally we use a little weber for grilling, and add the ashes to our compost bucket when they are cold if there is not a fire pit. If you buy a propane portable grill like one of the many then you can use one of your tanks and no mess. We also have a portable outdoor kitchen set up for areas without a table. You could also attach a bracket to the side of your trailer with a table that comes off it for cooking and use something like this table top grill...though I prefer to cook away from the trailer to keep food smells out of the inside. I also googled and found a couple of charcoal traveling grills that seem pretty sweet like this son of hibachi.

I hadn't seen the little grille with the carrying cases like those, that's a great solution. We can keep the fire pit for s'mores and use a grill for the steaks. The bumper mounted grill LOOKED like a lot of fun, but its just not as functional as other options.

I'll Take a picture of hubby's portable grill that he made several years ago and add it tomorrow. It breaks down to 3 pieces. The top barrel removes from the stand. I believe the stand lowers. The base is 2 pieces of metal that form an X when open, but they fold in together to transport. Welded chain for the hinges to open the grill. It's nice. Not too big either. I can manage it alone. People ask about it and take photos.

Sparkle, somehow you never look very "sparkely" to me. Are you as happy as can be? Sorry, curiosity and cats, ya know...

LOL! I just love the look on that cat's face. I am a pretty perky person but not the sparkly, girly girl type at all! Sparkle came to be when I first met a young lady I was case manager for. She has developmental disabilities. During that initial meeting, she told me her best friend was Sparkle. That's a memory that stuck with me and for some reason I thought of that when deciding on a forum username at VSTF. :-) Crazy cat lady would be a more fitting username for me!

We use a three burner Camp Chef portable range and a camping 'portable kitchen' from Cabela's for cooking while camping out. We got this setup for tent camping but jut throw the gear in the truck and it works just as well whie RV camping also.

Here are photos of the portable grill hubby made. Hoping I do this correctly on my phone... The Stand. The very bottom legs fold in to where they are parallel for storage. The grill part mounts here and is tightened secure. Chain welded to the top for the opening: My ugly foot just showing how small the grill is. I'm able to manage it alone and although it's small, it holds plenty.

Great weld job your husband did. I like the pipe "toes" on the footings to allow for staking down. Yes sir, with a cutting torch and a welder ...

I saw one a while back that was built into the rear side storage compartment, you opened the door and it slid out on a rail like a drawer. neat idea. here is what I use. a Coleman Roadtrip grill, it has a foldable platform to sit it on. and all stores in a big bag with wheels.
