I'm considering purchasing this 1964 Shasta Astrodome as a renovation project. Here are the pictures: plus.google.com/photos/113023246067006479718/albums/6055366481186138993When I looked at it in person here is what I observed: - Stove, Fridge and Heater work, electrical too (external power, no batteries or generator).
- Not sure about the sink and plumbing.
- No soft spots on the floor but I didn't pull up the carpet to see what the condition under there was. Judging by the pictures of the area underneath the rear bed it's probably OK.
- Didn't see any sagging but maybe you can tell from the pictures.
- Some leaking from the roof near the top vent above the sink that can be seen in the pictures.
- Judging by the fact that they added another pair of brake lights, I'm guessing the existing ones don't work but I didn't test them.
- Underbelly seems ok with no visible damage or holes or anything.
- There is some damage behind the propane tanks on the front of the trailer that can be seen in the pictures; seems to be just cosmetic.
- Screen door is falling off and would probably need to be repaired or replaced.
- There is an external canopy that these last folks added within the last 5 years.
- Wheels and tires are just OK but are rusty.
Current owners have had it for 5 years; they saved it from someone who was going to scrap it; they got it for free. They camped in it off and on for a few years, then lived in it for a year, and now it's just been sitting in their yard for the last couple years. Owners are asking $1,500.00. Thinking of offering $900.00 but wanted to get your advice. See any red flags in the photos? What would you pay for this camper?

If I am not mistaken it is showing water stains in some corners so you probably have some frame work to replace but if it has a clear title and everything works it should be worth $900.00 even if you pull it apart and rebuild it.

yeah, these are worth exactly as much as a person is willing to pay, personally if I were looking I'm right with you, at around $800-$1000, however these are getting more popular, even I have seen a large increase in interest and price in the last 3 years or so. prices are going up, and there is a person somewhere willing to pay $1,500 for it.
price depends on 2 things
how much a person wants it
how quickly the seller wants to sell it.

It looks like the usual water damage under windows and around the edges where the putty failed. I would get under and (discreetly) poke around the thin board that the tin wrapped around. Based on the rot you find, you'll know how much water ran down the walls. With that said, $1000 seems fair to me. But it really does (as others have said) depend on how much you want it. And how much you want to put into it of your time and money. If you're planning to sell in a couple of years, money is all important. If you will keep it for many years to come, an extra few hundred one way or another is not a big deal. A word of warning, the folks on this site are the Sharks of the vintage world. Truth be told, they never want to pay more than a few hundred. Some of them have gotten campers for less than they spent on gas towing them home. For a barn find, never rained on, camped in once in 55 years, plastic covers still on the cushions, manual still in the package on the pristine dinette, they might pay $1000...maybe

Also, consider if the trailer is close to you and towable (which it appears to be, although appearances can be deceiving) then you don't have the expensive of shipping and relocating it. Yes, some people spend $200 on a trailer and then spend $1000 to ship it or tow it home. My point is, $900 for trailer down the road is equal to a $200 trailer $1000 miles away.

Domes are known for dome rot... But you could always CUT it off and do away with all that rotten wood...
It's in OK conditions and appears to need extensive repairs. I'm guessing the skirt boards are shot, edges rotted (at least up to the front/rear windows)and some wall framing needs to be replaced. To replace the ceiling panels, the roof should be removed to do it correctly. That being said, I've seen a LOT worse. Wings are missing. (that's 300 bucks)
If it has a title, it might be a good buy at $900. A little high in my book, but if it will suit and you are willing to do the repairs, go for it. Buy what you like.
NO TITLE NO BUY.

Thank you everyone for your input! What an awesome and knowledgable community!
My wife and I are already undertaking the renovation of our 1979 Airstream Excella 500 31', so we're just going to focus on that for the time being. We do love Shasta's though; very iconic!

I'd pay $1000 for that in a heart beat. It's complete... It's a Shasta.... and it's not beat to crap. It's gonna have to be completely rebuilt for the most part. Especially the top. I've seen the insides of these things and they are all rotten. The extent of the rebuild will be shown when the skin comes off. Some say to chop the dome off but to be honest, I think they are worth an extra $2k over the Airflyte because of the dome if it's rebuilt properly. Just a little more curbing and framing is all. I would definately put a new metal skin top on it too. Where is this thing?
If you can't talk them down and ya gotta have it and you have the money, an extra $500 is nothing really.

Hamlet is with mobiltec. With the re-issue of the Airflyte, the larger models will see a resurgence, we're certain. Turn that large rear closet into a potty room, maybe even with a shower and you've really got something nice.

As much as I don't regret buying our '63 Winnebago 16' I would have sooner bought this for 8 to 10 bills had I found it first. Love the coral and white two-tone and the 'dome, all I can picture is this Astro all restored behind my '64 Buick wagon and heading for a car show or the campground! Hope you bought it, wish I could have...

So yeah, it's worth what your willing to pay for it and what they're willing to sell it for.
couple of observations,
1) it is not a Astrodome, it is a Astroflyte, (astro=cab over, dome=toilet) 2) Lots of rot in the front, the upper front windows were prone to leaking, and the platform that makes up the bunk is only 5/8" plywood, you can see separation in the tin on the over hang which means there is nothing there anymore. 3) as Mobiltec said you'll need to completely rebuild it, why? because it's a Shasta. 4) lots of weight on the "A" frame because they are nose heavy and they can stress crack...as me how I know.
Cut it, Chop it...death to the Astros!

Hey now you two, I understand what you're saying about what you obviously both consider flaws or weaknesses in Astrodomes/Astroflytes but there are plenty of 'no Astro' models out there for you to amuse yourselves with! Cease the selfish circumcisions and leave those 'flawed Astros' for the folks that dig that look. Be considerate, paws-off, no snippee-snippee!!! LOL... Hummm... when it's time comes maybe I should revamp it and add some 'Astro' to this horrible 2nd gen Compact I have out back. A boxy 3/4 size Astro-Compact, well now wouldn't that rub some purist's fur the wrong way? Lol...
