well, I attempted to cut down my 12x12 tiles to 9x9, and happy to report it was a success. I have a flooring cutter I got from a pawn shop for $70.00 I then built a guide 9 inches from the blade to make perfect repeatable 9x9 cuts each time, it seems to work perfect. and the cut edges are smoother than the factory cuts. here are some pics. 12x12 tiles ready to cut down2 sides cut so it is now 9x9
4 pieces cut to 9x9

That looks like it makes it nice and easy.
I'm really liking the color choice.

The 9 x 9s should make the floor area look larger in that combination, I like it.

well, I got them all cut down, and got them all trimmed and placed, not sure what I am doing really, never messed with tiles, but I read you should cut and lay them all out first. ready to take them up, clean the floor again and glue them in place.

Are you laying them over the existing tiles? How are you prepping the floor? I'll be doing this sometime soon, have been toying with the idea of cutting them down. Yours looks great!

I put down a layer of 1/4 inch luan subfloor (quality luan with a solid core-not MDF core) over the original tiles. following recommendations from people here on the board.

That looks awesome! Can you cut me some tiles? JK.
BTW, your old tiles are the same color/pattern as what is in ours. Too bad it's not still around, I liked the colors.

I cut my tiles down on the table saw. A good sharp 80-tooth carbide blade and a home-made "zero-clearance" throat plate in the saw table did the trick slick as can be. The zero-clearance plate is a piece of quarter-inch plywood with no slot in it. You install it with the blade all the way down, then holding it down with a big piece of scrap, slowly raise the blade up through it, so the slot is only as wide as the blade. This helps prevent chipping the tile when you cut it. I also made a little jig to cut triangular pieces using the same 9" rip fence setting. My pictures start here. BTW, I read on the Internet (so it must be true...) that the reason you can't get 9" tiles any more is that when people started to become aware of the dangers of asbestos, Armstrong said "Henceforth, all our tiles will be 12" and contain no asbestos. If you see a 12" tile, you'll know it's asbestos free." Makes sense to me, and it's a fun bit of trivia to share at trailer rallies.. -Gary

Were the old asbestos tile 9"x9" or 8"x8" I was thinking they were 8 x 8. I was thinking you used 3 tile every 2 foot. Doesn't matter just wondering

Oh my goodness...now I see this thread...AFTER I cut all my tiles down BY HAND!!! Tedious scoring, and breaking...and then sanding the edges!! I had never done any kind of flooring or tiling, and what a project that was! Power tools would have made it so much easier! I cut mine down to 9x9's and decided to put them on the diagonal. Because they were all hand cut and even though I used a template to score them...they are ever so slightly off, here and there...sanding the edges helped. Such a major improvement over the "before"...I love it! BEFORE:
