Yes, I've looked online at all the cheap ones. Already looked for Willys Jeep springs. J.C. Whitney sells them and even the cheap replacements aren't cheap in price.

If anyone has replaced their leaf springs on their first generation Compact, could you please tell me what size/model/source you replaced them with? I know I can measure them but mine are pretty flattened. I really need to go ahead and order some or call the local trailer place and have them order them so they can put them on when I'm finally finished (soon I hope). What did you end up doing? replacing or fixing? One of mine is broke too

I still haven't done anything. Mine are not broken they just seem to sag. The guy at our automotive shop said that he would measure them for me, order and replace them for me.
There is a member on our forum who had hers replaced and said they did not have to have anything welded and that they took a standard size that her shop had in stock but she was in a big city. She never got back with me to tell me what size they used.

Thanks susie, mine does not sag at all, you can just see that one of the parts the hold the springs together is broke off, the springs themselves are not broke, so it would probably be cheaper for me to have someone fix it vs replace it. I was also thinking about measuring mine and buying them off here www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Trailer_Suspension-sf-Leaf_Springs.aspx because they are so cheap off there. But I do live in a big city so neither would be hard for me to accomplish, i guess. I'm just so cheap, I don't like people price gouging me to throw one on And I'm still working on the dang coupler maybe one day ill be able to tow it hahah

How far should a compact sit off the ground? Mine is about 10 inches. That seems kind of low. I have trouble even getting a jack under it sometimes( I have to dig out the gravel to get it under it). Just wondering if that is normal. It also scrapes going into alot of driveways.

Can you post a photo?

WE looked under our 1962 compact, the arch of the leaf springs looks about the same as yours, maybe just a little flatter. The big difference is that out leaf springs are mounted under the axle and it looks like your is mounted over the axle. Is this how your compact came of did you change it to get more height? Thanks

This is how I think our Compact came from the factory. I changed the ubolts which looked as if they had never been touched. The notch for the plate that holds the ubolds in place was at the top of the springs. I wouldn't advise flipping the axle if it didn't come from the factory that way. Our 62 Forester had springs the other way. It sits much lower to the ground. Is there a chance somebody flipped your springs to the bottom because they wanted it lower? Do you have a photo you can share? Maybe somebody with another Compact will chime in. Or you can PM SusieQ. She also has a 62 Compact.

I'll take a photo and post it soon. So you didn't "flip the axle", you just changed the leaf springs to the top of the axle instead of the bottom?

Just looked under my camper, its all dirty and now has cobwebs all over it, weird, it wasn't like that last fall… guess its time to clean it up down there. Anyways here is the photo, looks like my springs are a little flatter than nccamper's do you think i need to have them rebent or replaced? my original thought was to take them apart and clean, scrap, and paint them and get new clips and u bolts. But now I don't know. Crappy phone photo

Some people take them to a spring shop and ask them to be rebuilt. If you can get them cheap enough, I would just replace them with new. Springs in standard sizes are not very expensive. Our Forester had an odd size and we had the shackle repositioned to fit a standard size spring. Your springs seem a little flat to me. Not terrible, but the arch could be better. Replacing them might gain you an inch or two. This is how our Compact sat with the springs shown. If your camper sits lower, springs should help.

Sometimes I make a trip to Tractor Supply, just to wander around in their trailer parts section. They have a number of sets of springs and lots of other stuff, pretty reasonably priced. Here is a thread I pulled up that identifies parts that can be ordered or possibly found in your local TS store. If you know what you want they might be a source for a lot of axel/wheel goodies. www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/catalog/trailer-parts
