Shastas are like the first generation Mustangs, or as you noted Schwinn bicycles, or Frigidaire refrigerators from the 1950's...they are a moment in time crystallized into a tangible shape. Yes, they were cheaply constructed, but they were bought in greater numbers and have a symbolic resonance with most people who were alive during that time. Their symbolic value FAR FAR exceeds their intrinsic value (except for the last year or so), and I believe that the people who invest so much labor and money into restoring them are doing so to hang on to a tangible reminder of a better time. I have been restoring vintage soda machines and gas pumps for 25 years now, but I quit doing it for resale about 10 years ago when the craze exploded and POS rusty machines were bringing 2-3K, and restored correctly were going for 8K. Greed drives a lot of the market, and we see this in the vintage camper craze now. There is a sociological answer to your question and stated simply it is that in times of economic fear and uncertainty, people look back with fondness at what they perceive as a better time (Nostalgia). In times of economic growth and optimism, people look to the future as rosy and inviting. I need not comment further on the current trend.

I'm sad to say that I just missed out on another wingless beauty. If I had only called yesterday instead of today, it could have been mine. And it had wings. It took me too long to bring it up to the hubby and he was actually OK with it this time.

You are most certainly in trouble now first you went off the deep end and now you have talked your husband into joining you. I can see it now, you will buy a 100 acres and totally fill it with old Shastas then people will refer to it as SusieQ's Shasta ranch the home for old and lonely Shastas of every shape and description. I am afraid there is no hope for you now.

Oh, Starflyte's are cool. Swamper has a great name. I'm shooting for a 1500, I like the narrow body like a Compact, and I still have a slight chance of getting one. LadyW, I've got prayers going up.

John, for me it had to be a Shasta plain & simple. It took me 4 or 5 years before I found the right candidate,I didn't care about wings,it had to be wingless because that's the type that my grandparents had that left a lasting impression on me and I got to go camping with them in that cute two tone canned ham. it had to be mid 50's and being a glutton for punishment it is a real pile but with my restoration background I am up to the task,,sure there is a lot of difference between cars and campers but I feel I can pull it of. Someone really must love what they invest time and money in,,,hopefully in the next couple of years I can join the ranks of the cult users instead of just a owner. Now,if I can just get a customers car out of my shop so I can get started back on the Shasta after several weeks of ignoring it. Danny

Danny Danny, I "totally get it", It just would not look right pulling a newer trailer behind your restored 54 Ranch Wagon.
You "need something to pull", and I'm looking "for a puller". If it weren't for us living on different ends of the country, we should just rent each others toys. It save us both money and time.
I sold my 1932 Roadster this weekend, and I'm "aggressively looking" for a 57 Ranch, or 57 Del Rio wagon as my "new puller".
The sickness continues.

Love the gutted pic. So easy to see why it was called the Spartan Aircraft Company.
