Second thread this morning so you all can see now into the interior of our recently acquired Shasta Compact ! Started to remove a 7 year old vct tile floor from an older, maybe 10 years old, but not asbestos, vct floor underneath. The original floor which I would imagine to be the 9 x 9 asbestos is intact under the second 10 year old floor. Do not want to get involved with the original floor so just leaving the 10 year old one on. Anyway, been using the old putty knife, chisel, method and I will be crippled by the time I get it done unless I come up with a better method. Any suggestions ? I have read that using a heat gun will soften the adhesive under the top layer being removed. This was put on with adhesive, not a stick on type tile. Thanks for any help !!! Regards, Mike

I used to use a damp towel with a hot iron to soften the tile and glue, I don't know how that would effect the second layer.

I agree on the heat gun. Also, my Fein Multimaster has a blade that will lift flooring. Not sure on the other brands. Are you trying to save the original flooring or plan to put a layer of subfoor over it??

Thanks y'all for the advice! Planning on leaving the original floor and the 10 year old floor in place . Know carrying a bit more weight with extra two layers but sub floor in great shape and do not want to disturb original asbestos tile. Thanks Mike

Hey all, Got an inexpensive heat gun and it does the trick perfectly. Of course it's hot outside and now even hotter inside but at least I won't have claws for hands when I'm done. Also softens the adhesive and it comes right off too. Regards Mike

Have another question for the group - I have been able to remove most of the old adhesive when removing the old tile BUT not all of it. Floor is obviously sticky but can I just put down more adhesive when I install the new VCT tile ?

Floor is obviously sticky but can I just put down more adhesive when I install the new VCT tile ? Test it. Just do a small area of say 3 tiles first and let it set over night and then see if they come up easily. Sometimes if the glue is contaminated it may not do it's job right. But in my experience, as long as they used the right glue and it seems they did, it should be OK... I have a complete series on how to lay VCT on my website if you are interested. Also if you do want to get the old glue up , believe it or not WD40 will remove it.

Hey Mobiltec, Thanks for the feedback and your website is outstanding. If I do not have to remove all the old adhesive is there some way to clean it properly before I would put new adhesive on ? Since I've been walking around with my size 11's no longer a totally clean surface anymore ! I'll try the WD40 in a spot and see how hard it is to clean up. Thanks, Mike

Sanding, goof off or wd40 or a bit of each. You can also put down an underlayment of luan over the old glue which is what most people do.
