Here's a question that's been annoying me, why do the Shasta's brackets lie horizontal and my Vette's are vertical? Does it affect how they are used? I've seen more vertical, I think. Not earth shattering, just been bugging me. Corvett, there is a horizontal board, like a narrow shelf, in the Shasta Compacts that actually supports the weight of the bunk. That is what the brackets are screwed into. Amazing, since the only thing holding them in is screws through the frame board. The only purpose the brackets serve is to keep the poles in place. I have seen one instance where someone braced the shelf. I have considered adding supports to mine but it seemed to work as is for 50 years so I'm going to take my chances.

Here is what the original ends look like. If you have access to a drill press its easy to duplicate. The hole for the screw is tapered and so is the screw head so it sits almost flush with the pipe. I believe the wood is a 3/4" hardwood dowel.

Wow, KTO, your brackets aren't like the ones in the Compact. Yours are on a vertical wall as Corvett was describing. Thanks for sharing what the ends of the poles originally looked like. I don't have the original poles but I have the original scratches.

Not earth shattering, just been bugging me. I've never seen them sideways. I don't now how they could hold the poles in if they are sideways. Some of the older Shasta brackets came with little top covers to keep the poles from jumping out of them But I don't think that would be strong enough to keep the poles in if they are sideways.

Are these for a canvas pole bunk or a wooden folding bunk?

Thats still for the canvas. That wood "shelf" is horizontal and carries the weight. The bracket just keeps the pole from sliding around on the shelf..... Seen it before and still scratching my head as to why...
If you come across a Scotty cot the brackets have a small void in them and some have a bracket that is a UU in one casting so you can roll up the cot around one pole and store it beside the other pole out of the way. That's what was installed in the front of our Deluxe. I'll look to see if I have a picture.

Just for you, Mobil. There should be three brackets on each side.
