vintagebruce, we used to buy one of those hibachis almost every year at the grocery store. We'd use it all summer and into fall and of course left it outside on the picnic table all the time. They used to cost about 5 or 10 bucks! I haven't seen one in years. I remember the old cheap hibschi's,they were idea for two people and you are correct,leave them out all winter and they held snow and water and rusted out quick.
I bought a cast iron one from Ace Hardware last summer and it's great when camping,but gone is the 10 dollar hibachis.
This one was around 30 dollars. Danny

I am a sucker for cast iron and we have several pieces we use on a daily basis and when we decided to take up camping again I started looking at flee markets but the prices for nice pieces were higher than a cats back and then at a big auto swap meet I found a 6" skillet & a big frying pan and they looked like they had been left outside for the last 50 years.
They were extremely rusty and the man ask me what they are worth and I said I don't know,I don't see any marks and he said make me a offer.
I said 10 bucks for both and he said sold.
As some of you already know my other passion is vintage cars so I have equipment to make this job easier so I tossed them in my bead blasting cabinet and within 20 minutes they looked like brand new castings.
Several coats of lard and a equal amount of heat cycles in the oven and they were ready to use once again.
BTW,the 6" skillet turned out to be a Griswold the bigger pan is a Wagner. Danny

HI gang do not buy any from China or a Taiwan. Only USA actually the older the better. I own my Grandmother all different kinds and sizes. I have four or five plus a dutch oven w/glass lid. Seller tomarrow at the cool once a month UpscaLe Flea Market at the Country Village Sunday 10 - 4 pm. Cool guy stuff tools, knives, collectablez, vintage items, plants,fabric, art, small furnature, and painted art duck decoys.

I was lucky to find a whole new Lodge set including the green welder type gloves, dutch overn/lid with hanger, and 3 sided skillets in an old hardware store for $40 on one of our trips (we were stopping at every little place looking for a bow and/or arrows for my son while on this trip). I also found several small Skookie skillets in a antique type shop for a few bucks. Had minimal rust. Just cleaned up with light soap and water and scrubbed with wet paper towels until the rust was gone, then seasoned in the oven. Perfect for one or two eggs or the perfect grilled cheese sandwich! I keep them seasoned by using a light spray of veggie oil and paper wipe after use. My favorite is the low rim Lodge skillet, and the small Skookie skillet. I think the Skookie seems to hold up better than the Lodge, but I use the bigger Lodge for searing steaks and that requires more cleaning. Anybody for a smoky seared steak? Poquito

I have my in-laws Hibachi, It's probably over 50/60 years old. I thought the body was cast iron but it actually is cast aluminum with cast iron grates. I don't use it much anymore but probably will start using it again after son goes to college. Perfect for two, a challenge for a family of four. Poquito
