I am having a really hard time with this pretty easy question! I love to travel, have been to most of the 50 states (by car or air) and camped in a pop-up with the kids when they were little. We graduated from that little pop up to a trailer at a permanent campsite - which my son now uses with his children. I missed the traveling part and fell in love with vintage trailers. I think the hunt became my hobby for a couple of years. Since I don't (can't - don't have the talent) restore, I live through all the fantastic posts of those that can. Lucky for me I have made good, really good, friends here and have or will have two fantastic trailers to enjoy traveling in and meeting up with everyone else that loves these vintage gems.

Larry like one guy said I planned on this being my job but after looking at the profit level I realized it was a hobby. Seriously I hope to never need a job again I LOVE retirement, I wish I could have done this 50 years ago.

Mine started out because of an agility addiction (dog agility that is). My friends would show up at trials and set up their campers and I decided I wanted to do that but when I started looking at trailers I couldn't handle the ugly factor (and price) of new ones. I'd lived in and worked on an historic home so I thought I'd "fix" up an old trailer. Almost two years later I'm still fixing up the old trailer and I doubt it'll be done any time soon. But it has soul. And luckily my second dog is a smaller one instead of the "pony" size of the other one so it's possible we'll all fit into it - someday. And then I'll show up at a trial, set up my camper, and get out my chairs to have happy hour.

Having just recently purchased our project camper after a 4 year long search and have yet to get started but I see it as a long term hobby or another nail in my coffin because for some reason I have always been attracted to saving things that sane people would walk away from, but the more I read here the more I start to believe I am not the one to suffer from this malady.
I have never owned a camper in the past although may grandparents had a early Shasta and I spent many a summer weekend with them and the memories are something I hope to share with my youngest granddaughter.
I would also like to say that my wife is really excited about this project, she enjoys the old cars but doesn't get into all the fabrication and body & paint work but she is really chomping at the bit to get started and helping with the restoration. Danny

" for some reason I have always been attracted to saving things that sane people would walk away from, but the more I read here the more I start to believe I am not the one to suffer from this malady." Danny After reading this post I have to laugh, because I bet there is a large number of stray dogs, stray cats, foster children and other rescued orphans and items attached to the people in this group….seems to be something we do in many areas of our life. Hmmm maybe we can get a charity status for all our hard work.

"STRAY" cats??? Her Royal Highness Ziva (the Diva) would take umbrage at being called a 'stray'. However, Snowshoes are gracious creatures, so she forgives the insult. For now. Ziva is the one wearing rhinestones.

While sweeping away leaves and cleaning the balcony tables and chairs, I noticed that this old Howard Johnsos Motor Lodges ash tray is the same turquoise as my trailer appliances. It's going in the camper, only a few days after saying I would have no vintage frou frou in there. When will I learn to stop saying stuff like that?

Really cool, Dawn. You will also have more than one vintage trailer as time goes on. Trust me.

Our old Wilderness is our main camper and I guess maybe/also a bit of a hobby to? Repairs that I make I do because it needs it but I have fun in the process.
I grew up camping in the north east as a kid we did tents and pop up campers then as an adult back to tents and van camping but always wanted a pull behind and then a few years ago was searching for a canned ham which one day I will find the one "looking for me" and came across the "toaster" and as usual it "looked" like it was in great shape and as all stories seem to go after getting it home found multiple problems but have done repairs and used it on many week long vacations and have really enjoyed it BUT... Still long for that ole canned ham "cutie"!
EDIT: And I think I better buy one from this group of folks that fix them up and sell them so I don't get fooled again

You have gained enough knowledge that maybe you should consider building a brand new canned ham from scratch then you would have the best of both worlds. A brand new unit that looks 60 years old, plus the pride in doing it your self. just a thought.

Bill If I had a garage I would love to slowly rebuild one
I only have a small area that is taken up by this little project I bought a few weeks ago and I barely have room to get around it in here
