I'm looking at foam as well. But what about that really thick packing 'air foam?' that is used to ship really heavy stuff. I like that stuff! If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's the heavy-duty stuff that is NOT styrofoam, it's the stuff, well I can't describe in words. Better get over to the back alley of SEARS LOL....it can be as thick as 4" btw, and holds up great.

I am in the throws of preparing to order foam in the near future. I just spent some time researching John Palmer's suggestion of Foamonline.com.
For starters the website views weird and comes up with errors. I then read some reviews from people who've ordered from there. Not good. Most claim poor quality of product, then when they try to make contact with the company regarding their concerns they are ignored. If they have received a response they are told the company takes no responsibility for the quality of their products. Yikes, that's scary...
** I'm not here to discount the word of a very experienced trailer restoration expert I just fear someone from our forum having an experience like these and not a good one like Mr. Palmer.
On another note: I have a quote from a local foam supplier for about $500.00 for 4" Foam rubber for the dinette and gaucho. I wouldn't need to pay shipping as it is local and I have actually seen and touched the product so I would know what I would be getting. I haven't totally ruled it out, I'm just gun shy on that price tag...
My search continues...

That's funny, the link is totally different from the place I had decided to use, but when I visit both links, their the same company. This is what I finally decided to get for the bed after months of searching: www.foamdistributing.com/MFM-_5/5lb-memory-foam-mattress.html $306 isn't bad if it lives up to what they say about it. I had been thinking about getting www.foamdistributing.com/HDHQ/hd36-high-quality-foam.html and having them cut the mattress size and for the bench seats, but I want my seats to be original looking which means I have to find someone local who can make them and upholster them. It just wouldn't be cool to take foam in to the shop and tell them to use that cause I got it cheap😁

I've been re-reading old threads on foam and am reviving this one because it has a lot of information. I am going to purchase my foam from www.thefoamfactory.com/ since it's local and many people have used it (it's mentioned several times in this thread). Shipping isn't the issue since with just about any purchase it's free, but I'm hoping that I might be able to find some remnants at a reduced price for my gaucho. I digress, my real question is: Has anyone built their foam gaucho out of a combination of the denser and firmer foam on the bottom and a "topper" glued to the top, all inside of the cushion? I'm thinking HD36-HQ 4" with "2 topper a of memory or latex. If someone cut of a memory foam mattress, and upholstered it, would be the same animal. I don't want to have to store a topper somewhere, I alread won't have enough room for food AND clothes. I know, I know, why not just buy the memory foam mattress, well.. because it has one of the cheapest poly foams on the bottom, I figure I'll get many more years, not to mention comfort if I upgrade the base foam. Plus, because I'm willing to do the gluing - it's cheaper. Please let me know if you have done either of these and if you used the poly fiberfill around it. Thanks.

This is a little off the question above but I've bought memory foam mattresses from Walmart for $150 or less and converted the gaucho into a permanent bed. We pull the cover off and cut it down with a saws-all (no kidding) to fit then resew the cover. On my latest camper we have a 10" memory foam mattress which is very, very comfortable.

CorvettCrzy I bought my foam from the foam factory. Inside the store are samples for you to sit on, I switched sitting on 2 different ones that I was having trouble deciding between. I cant remember which one I ended up picking, I think its 4" MD lux. I have used it quite a few times this summer now and it is the most uncomfortable thing to sleep on ever, though it is comfortable to sit on. I slept terrible on it every night. I do have a 1.5" memory foam topper I plan to cut to size and glue on this winter when I sew the covers. Im hoping that helps, I would suggest a topper for sure.

I have 1 1/2” memory foam on top of 4” Joanne foam and i’ve Been using it for two years now and it is awesome. Just got back from a trip this week!

I have same but it is a 2" memory foam cut to size on gaucho 4" foam and very comfortable. Only thing is I covered my cushions in one type of material and makes it hard to tell which side the memory foam is. So if you are using same type of cover you might want to make a way of telling top from bottom. I can kind of tell where the 2" is and that is the only way of telling.

Thanks nccamper mel @suzieq This is exactly the information I was hoping to get. I guess I was concerned mostly because I thought compressing the memory foam inside a cover might reduce its effectiveness, but obviously as nccamper reminded, it's already in a cover, albeit not a real tight one. I had looked at the lux because more $$$=quality, usually, but now I think I will definitely rethink my base foam choice and get something between what mel and SuzieQ purchased, and move up to a two inch topper rather than the 1" I was planning (thinner recommended for stomach sleepers). Although it'll probably be used more for sitting than sleeping, I don't think sitting on the memory foam would be a "problem". Thanks so much! Although I realize mattresses are a very individual thing, your willingness to always share your experiences is so helpful!!

My upholstery guy had told me not buy the cheap foam and asked about the material suggesting a cheaper choice for the back side, as a side benefit this would eliminate losing the memory foam. My gaucho will be vinyl, so I'm thinking I'll need a fairly heavy material on the back that doesn't stretch because I'd like a snug fit. And although I think he'd rather not, I'm trying to decide on cording. I like the look, just wondering about comfort. Any suggestions on material choice? @lovinvintage mel did you or will you wrap the foam in that poly fiberfill? mel Did they have remnant pieces large enough for part of the gaucho (10"x75")? If not I think I might just order it online. One more question mel, sorry, did you look at the latex toppers? Softness compared to memory foam?

CorvettCrzy, they didnt have remnants that big. So you might just want to order online. But it was nice to sit on them and feel them in the store. I bought a 1.5" king size mattress topper on clearance for 70% off at Target a while ago, so I wasn't being picky on which kid of foam it is. Its not latex. I just went and looked at it, I guess its 2" not 1.5". Im not sure if im going to wrap in fiberfill yet. I kid of want to but im so done with putting money into the compact that I dont know if I will or not. It will probably depend on if I see a good deal or not.

I was able to go to local bed builder and he ordered me foam skins for my benches. The skin on one side is very tough and sits well on top of springs and will not fall apart. He also had a mesh we used on top of those springs. I got 6x2x2" foam skins for about 10 bucks a piece. That was a deal and the guy even helped staple the springs back to the frames with his special stapler and hog ring of stuff to the top of the springs. We did it at his shop so I just didn't get much for pictures.
