.....Today cabinet makers here can only get poorly made foreign made 1/8" plywood and the local lumberyards only carry 5'x5' pieces. Just saw this. When I see 5 x 5 sheet mentioned that means it is likely Baltic Birch from the Baltic Region and made in Russia. I an not aware of any other plywood that comes in 5x5 sheets. I use a lot of 1/2" Baltic Birch in my kayak kits I sell. It has proved to be a better plywood wood for our boats than anything else we can get. Well, except for true imported marine grade plywood. Usually very good quality but I am seeing some flaws in past year we have never seen before. The odd size is perfect for my boat kits. I can get one boat out of sheet with minimal waste too. Of course, I have never used the 1/8" but I love working with it (so far). And while I am a big Buy American guy, I prefer imported plywood, not Chinese, over US made. The best marine plywood I have used comes from Israel of all places.

Thank you Debra for this tip. I got panels from their Hickory location. They were actually only $16/sheet or at least that day. He also said the Marion location now has 1/8" birch but is the bendable kind. I can't remember the price, I want to say $20 something. But the ash worked out very well.

I had to call 7-10 places before I found 4x8 1/8” birch. Finally found BARRY LUMBER in SACRAMENTO, CA, and the guy I spoke with, David, was very helpful, he checked around for me and got it for me from a wholesaler in Sacramento, Royal Plywood. It was about $56 sheet no label on back but looks very nice. I bought it before I read all the stuff about birch from China so hopefully it’s good. 😬
