Hi all,
I already commented on a few other threads and started a couple of my own before I even officially introduced myself! My name is Jannica, and I am the recent new owner of a 1961 Shasta Compact that I have decided to call Junebug. I found Junebug on craigslist all the way over in New Mexico in early December 2013, and I just knew she was the one! I live in Houston, so I headed out one weekend for the long 14 hour drive each way to get her. I really hoped she wasn't completely rotten when I got there after driving that far! Luckily she was in decent condition (although not perfect by any means) so she came home with me. As popular as vintage campers are right now, I thought I got her for a decent price, so I was happy!
I immediately got to work fixing her up so I could camp in her over Christmas. She was quite cozy, which was a relief since I had never actually slept in a camper before, and I am a super light sleeper! Shortly after that, I realized the seams in the roof were either, 1. Gaping open or 2. loaded with screws and sealant but still leaking. ugh I also started noticing many other blemishes that I couldn't wait to fix. I have now gone full speed ahead doing a full restoration. I watched many (but not all, not yet anyway) of Larry's videos and have found them so helpful. Thanks Larry! mobiltec I am in the process of removing the skins at the moment, and I will be replacing all of the wood paneling interior with birch among other things before replacing the skin and then repainting. I'm planning to order a new roof and rear replacement skin from Steve at Hemet Valley RV, thanks to recommendations from others on here and elsewhere. I'm hoping to do most of the work myself if I live that long. haha
Here are some pics (which can also been seen at http://www.junebugflying.com):
Here's what she looked like for my Christmas camping excursion (in my grandma's driveway
I had to decorate Junebug with this wine that is named after her of course. My mom also gave me these 1961 Christmas collectibles at Christmas and I thought they made a nice addition to the kitchenette.
This is the kitchenette with the old curtains. It had the original ice box and stove. I have since removed the ice box to make room for a working refrigerator.
