I am getting dangerously close to attempting this roof feat.......as my new roof is laying nearby haunting me as well. I hope I haven't missed anything.......... Sorry about the delay Moses... I took on a 57 Westerner that needs a new roof also and so I am doing the two side by side. The new roof for the Westerner will be here on the 10th and I will be installing it as soon as it shows up. So figure on a video no later than about the 13th...

Hey...no problem. I think I'm good, but I still think you will beat me to it. The weather is getting bad here this week. I got one side buttoned up today, with the bottom piece on the left hand side remaining to re-install. I had to do some work around the wheel well.....lots of rot there. If I can get that on soon, I will be ready to start the roof I think. Quick question for you.....how hard is this new roof to wrangle? Will I need six guys to help me, or can a couple of us do it. Any idea?
Also......I've got some whit butyl tape I bought from an RV dealer near here. Is there a big difference in brand names of butyl tape? I am hoping this stuff I have is adequate. As usual....thanks for the help. Looking forward to seeing your roof install video. Happy New Year!

Looks like Im doing these by myself. I have always done the others pretty much by myself but they were not new. I have some tricks I have learned from talking to others so stay tuned. I will be starting with the Westerner which you can see on my you tube site now. I still need to update the canned ham website. I receive the roof for that one on the 10th. I already have the roof for the Shasta which I will install right after the Westerner side by side.

Moses, sounds like you bought modern RV Butyl putty, which will work just fine. It's a little stickier than the old standard putty and slightly harder to trim.(It is not butyl tape, an entirely different animal). You did good.

One more quick question. Can/should this butyl tape be used when the skin is re-attached on the bottom/underneath side of the trailer? Does that make sense to you? LOL .........just curious to know if that seam where skin meets bottom of trailer needs the same kind of treatment. Sorry to bother.......and thanks!

Putty Tape is used on all openings in the trailer walls and roof and under the J Rail. Some manufacturers even put it under the fold over from the roof, front and rear metal skin panels. I use it on the wheel well trim also because that's just a good place to trap water and the wheel wells are always rotted out I that area. As far as where the metal skin attaches to the bottom of the trailer, no. Never heard of anyone using it there.

That is a good question I never thought about it either. It would help keep road spray form getting in there when towing in the rain, which I under coat clear to the edge. But on the other hand if water got in there from some other place it couldn't drain out. To seal or not to seal that is the question. The factory didn't paint the sill boards and normally I don't either but I have been thinking that might be a good idea also.

I did paint the new inside pieces I built for the wheel well with some Kilz.....and now that you mention it, I may go ahead and paint the sill boards while I'm at it. I see what you you're saying about putty on the underneath side.....maybe not a good idea when considering potential drainage I reckon....although my skins are pretty rough on the bottom. I appreciate you helping me think this through bigbilll........

I don't see anything wrong with painting the wood with Kilz or any other type of sealer. Makes perfect sense to me. But if putty tape would trap water then I wouldn't use it there. Better to allow it to drain.
Vikx could you move this whole part of the conversation to a better place? We sorta hijacked the thread here and I'm sorry for it Cowcharge. That's actually twice now LOL. Who says lightning doesn't strike in the same place twice?

Considering how many people buy new roofs, a roof replacement thread would be a good idea.

Yes a section on roof replacement and repair would be excellent.

Rather than add yet another section, let's try labeling all the threads: ROOF, mine is leaking, or ROOF, where to buy metal, etc.

Speaking of which, I woke up with the flu last night so both of my roofs are on hold until I get well. At my age I can't take a chance on getting too sick.

Larry what's up with this flu stuff you don't have time to be sick. Seriously hope you are feeling better, take care as you said, I had a good friend a couple of years ago developed what he thought was a bad cold or flu went home sit down on the side of his bed to take off his shoes and that is where they found him the next morning. I had tried to talk him into going to the Doctor but he said he couldn't afford it (no insurance). I don't want to add you to that list.

I was down for 24 hours last week with the flu, and I was wishing I had died. It was nasty. Take care of yourself.
