I have to replace the tongue jack on my Shasta Compact. It's useless, rusted, no handle. However, I do have the original detachable metal wheel in great condition (also, useless). Anyway, I've looked Harbor Freight and TSC at their tongue jacks and read their reviews. HB had some good and bad, one particular bad stating that it had plastic parts inside. I know some here have used the HF tongue jack so what do you think? The TSC Reese is a little more expensive but is it better? Harbor Freight: www.harborfreight.com/2000-lb-a-frame-trailer-jack-92626.htmlTSC: Reese A Frame Jack www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/reesereg%3B-farm--ranch-a-frame-jack-2000-lbsUnless you tell me otherwise, think I'll go with the TSC Reese. Also, I have read that although they bolt on nicely, the diameter of the hole needs to be cut out 1/4" . Any input or experience with this? And one more thing. I do wish I had the wheel (not the original metal one) for ease of moving it, perhaps one with a pneumatic tire. I have friends who have added fold down jockey wheels to their trailers. Anyone here done anything like that? THANKS!!!

I use a two wheeled dolly that hooks in the coupler here at home. When not at home I try to not have to move it. With the dolly on my concrete drive it is very easy to move around.

VTS sells one that fits the hole and bolts right up, I've had mine for about a year and half, works great and they even have the wheel that fits the smaller diameter. There is also someone in Texas parting out a trailer and I'm sure he'd sell you his for $600!!

Didn't think about VTS having one that fits. Sometimes life is simple and we make it difficult.

To the best of my knowledge I still have the original and it works perfectly. Just call me lucky.

That looks like exactly what I need and will get! Great reviews and seems like just the thing. No torch necessary! Now here's a *dumb question, is the 1000lb referring to tongue weight? *seems like the only logically answer would be "yes' since it supports the tongue of the trailer, duh!

Yes it's the Tongue weight, and any weight that will bare on it, like humans and water when it's parked and the jack is down. The jack does fine with the weight my trailer, so it'll be great with a compact.

Lifting capacity, which applied here would be the tongue. Since the total weight of the Compacts are little more than that, it should be plenty.

Ya but the trailer has no table so it's not worth parting it out. Off to the races with it. Off to the races....
You might want to consider a side winder as opposed to a top winder. Saves the knuckles from hitting propane fittings and stuff.

I like both types of jacks: Top winders are good when your tail-gate is closer to the trailer. Some side winders end up in the front, depending on the way the tongue is configured, so don't fit as well. Most modern tongue jacks will work for our vintage trailers but be sure to measure the hole. The 1000 lb above will fit the 1 7/8" hole. Larger jacks need an 2 1/4" hole.
