Was thinking it might provide a good platform for a redneck temporary a/c install. Just wondering if anyone has any input on this.

My question would be how do you get the propane tanks out from under it? Will they come out easily? Or will it be a pain in the butt?

You say "local welder" like they're everywhere! Most of the in-city trade guys around here won't take small jobs because they're too busy doing large stuff for housing developments and business parks. That includes powdercoating even. But you're right, it probably would be cheaper.

Interesting idea. So the AC would sit on top and the hoses would cycle air through two TBD holes?
I bought a cheap welder and could probably make it but it wouldn't look great. Both you and Dan are right, a local welder would probably do a nicer job but it wouldn't be cheap now that the Great Recession is over.
Two issues: This system would sit partially obstructing the view out our front window. And as Mobiltec said above, it would need a custom designed rack that let you slide the gas tank out the side.
With that said, I appreciate any idea that doesn't require cutting a huge hole in my camper.

You mean "The PLANNED great depression." I hope you and others realize that the entire thing was planned from beginning to end. Almost 10 years in advance. We live in a very sick world right now.

When you say "round here" what general area are you talking? Metal fab and welding is what takes up most of my time after retirement. If I were going to build one, I'd make the two back mounting points pivotal and the one in at the front set up for a hitch pin. Take off whatever is on the tray, pull the hitch pin and raise the tray to change tanks. Lower and re-install pin. Not too much of a p.i.t.a.

I was thinking of using the platform only at the campground, not traveling with the a/c sitting on it. and my plan was to borrow from a post by WhitneyK using floor duct plenum to drier hose to a vent in a piece of plywood to insert in a window. I don't really need a/c all the time, but when it's hot in Texas, it's usually also extremely humid. Haven't looked into issues with getting in the way of the tanks yet...

Lots of people build a shelf made from wood that sets on the tanks themselves with a border around the bottom shaped like the tank tops so that it doesn't get blown off or fall off for any reason. They usually put flower boxes on there. But this would work for your needs and wouldn't cost you anything. Paint it like the trailer and only put it there when you are parked and using the AC... I have photos somewhere. But I don'nt know where off hand.
