The trailer we just picked up has twin beds and I was wondering if changing the trailer from a twin bed configuration to a double bed configuration would somehow weaken the trailer or maybe cause towing/stability issues? After I replace the back panel, we would like to run a double bed at the back and have a little night stand on the side of the bed closet to you at the bottom of the picture. So basically I would be turning the bed frames making one bed, obviously the frame is going to be rebuilt and the side access door would still have access to the storage under the bed. Any thoughts or suggestions or warnings would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! John

Why stop at a full size? I'd push it to queen with no cabinet if possible. The wood for the framing is going to be nothing compared to the weight of a more modern mattress.

Why stop at twin size is a good question. Another question to consider is why change it at all?
It's a very personal choice, but from one who has lived with trailer beds that make one person climb over the other, and lived with twins like yours (currently in our '62 Traveleze) we think there are significant advantages to the twins: they make for a great living space during the day when they function as two couches, more space for moving around and getting dressed, and space for the pets to sleep. Also, if you allow for the bed platforms to slide away from the wall a bit, they give each person great elbow and knee room.

I would say it was to keep the person on the inside from having to wake up/crawl across the person on the outside. Rare to see a bed not shoved against the wall and honestly, for short trips I would rather have this so I either of us can get up in the middle of the night to go the bathroom.

Hey, Aren’t you on the Woodnet form?

I like the look of the twin beds and it is (as stated above) a hassle climbing over somebody in the middle of the night. With that said, I think a solid frame stretching from side to side will add a little strength.
I like the condition of your original floor tiles.

How about a compromise. Keep the twins, but build a sliding bit that fills in the middle section when wanted (3 dog night). You can stow the extra cushions under one of the beds.

Two reasons for twin beds.
Reason number one. Ricky and Lucy could not be seen in the same bed together on TV back in those days... LOL... The Long Long Trailer movie displayed this sort of sleeping arrangement. Actually, back in the day twin beds were a popular form of birth control.
Reason number two. As stated earlier it makes it easier for one person to get up in the middle of the night without waking the other. And if your bathroom happens to be at the rear of the trailer behind the beds as many of these larger trailers were built, you can still get to the bathroom... This trailer does not have the bathroom at the end but many were built like that.

Is it all in that good of shape? Larry, Yes, the floor is in good condition. There are a lot of little things that will need attention. It is sad that the worst panel in the whole trailer is the one in the middle of the trailer. Here are some more photos for you.... Please let me know if you would like to see any more. Thanks! John

I show all that in more videos and it's also in Vikx' book. Not as difficult as one would think These things are built from the inside out so you must begin by removing the outside metal skin to replace panels. You need to reseal the trailer anyhow.

Start with the 57 Westerner series. Probably the best for your needs. It's smaller but they are all built the same. Some are just longer in the middle.
