Thinking of building one to house my Coleman stove and could use some inspiration. Have found many versions online but nothing it exactly what I want. I don’t have any real inspiration except that your post reminded m of some cherished camping trips. 35 years ago I bought a wood “camp kitchen” at a swap meet. It was gorgeous. I was younger and stronger then, but it was easy for me to get out of the back of the Jeep and set up. The man who made them had one with room for a stove at the bottom, but I was on a tight budget, so opted for a simpler one. It had two doors that opened from the middle. One side had a paper towel/dish towel holder and room below to store whatever. The other side had a place to store tall utensils, silverware, etc. the main compartment had two adjustable shelves. I had no trouble fitting a frypan and two stacking pots, four cups, glasses, plates and bowls as well as several 3-cup Tupperware containers for pasta, rice, oatmeal, etc. it was fabulous. We used it for camping until we got Hamlet a decade ago. It now lives with our son and daughter-in-law who have taken it on many camping trips (including Seattle to Boston and Seattle to Key West and all of the Lower 48). It has served them well and will get many more years of use with a growing family. The nice thing about the box that had space at the bottom for the stove was that I could even have fit a gas canister in the box. The whole thing would have weights in at around 25 pounds, easy enough even for me at 5’4” and 115 pounds. I hope you find what you’re looking for!

I still have the one my mom made for the back of our station wagon. But it was mainly constructed to hold lots of canned goods, which I avoid these days when possible. It sounds nowhere near as fancy or clever as the one Hamlet describes, but still has good memories attached to it! We use it in the shed now to hold cans of nails.

So, I'm a mediocre woodworker but wanted to risk a piece of plywood on my idea of a chuck box. I also bought a new table saw just when the honeydos dried up, so chance to test it out. My goals for this box: 1. Stove inside box. Most online plans use modern stoves with propane canisters. They store in the box and move to the top at the site. I wanted to just open the lid and have the stove ready to go. 2. Room for two Coleman lanterns. 3. Side tables that fold out from the top to either side of the stove. 4. Room for griddle, pan, pot, plates and bowls on bottom. 5. Room for 4 mugs and 4 cups. 6. Silverware drawer. 7. Doors for paper towels, spices, utensils. Here's how it's looking at the end of my free time today. Hopefully I get some time next weekend to wrap it up...

Getting closer. Hinges on order and a little stain and I'll be done. Pretty happy to get the thing done from a single sheet of cheap plywood.

You are on your way. You didn't mention handles to lift it with but loaded it is going to require a couple of strong comfortable handles. You might even consider another box to use as a pantry. We had two boxes to keep edible items in that were smaller and easy to handle plus our portable kitchen. Also make certain you use secure latches that little visitors can't get open.

Good advice Bill. We put some handles on the sides and emptied a can of shellac onto this thirsty wood. My top hinged doors didn't quite work out as I imagined but a little more hardware and I will be done..
