Got the paint off my icebox and looked great and we rinsed it and within five minutes it started to rust before our eyes! There wasn’t ANY rust on it when we got original paint off!!! So odd. We dried it quickly and got some mineral oil on it to help stop it from rusting. NOW WHAT DO I DO??? Help! 😳😳😳

The inside should never be painted because the paint just flakes off over time and clogs up the drain tube. If the galvanization is coming off then you have another problem. I don't really know what to do about that.
Anyone???

Steel will surface rust almost immediately. Sand it with say 320 grit sandpaper. Then you will need to clean the surface, and prime it prior to painting. At NAPA you can get # 7234 prep clean, and # 7220 direct to metal primer, both in aerosol. You do not need to sand the 7220 primer prior to paint, if you paint it within 24 hours. Hope this helps, I have been in the coatings industry 40 years.

I'd clean it really well, especially with the mineral oil on it and use a rustoleum primer. A bit of advice that stuck with me about these old painted things, that paint lasted for decades and is likely better adhered than any primer you can get today. Rather than stripping to bare metal, clean and scuff then paint over the original paint. I put tractor paint right over my old paint without primer and it's held up well.

The interior was already painted. Interesting. THANK YOU! So I should leave the interior just blank, correct?

So I followed your advice with the #7234 and7220 and then painting with rusteeze and when I started painting I guess my finger was too large for the nozzle and was hanging over and caused the paint to drip! 😳🙄UGH!!! So mad. As my husband says, give it that homey feel! I’m hoping the second coat covers it up! The same thing happened when I was working with the primer but I had gloves on. I took the gloves off after that thinking I’d fixed the problem! Not! Hoping it’s a glossier finish that it currently looks. Says gloss finish on can. Doesn’t look to shiny. Hmmm

If it doesn't shine up, try Rustoleum hammered silver. It has a really nice finish and is easy to paint/touch up. Of course it is hammered looking, but I like it.

Hi Friends, I might be late to the party on this one, but powdercoating can be an alternative. It's much much more expensive than a $6 can of paint, though. Very durable, though. Might be worth a phone call for estimates - or not. Cheers, Rod

If you want high gloss, you can coat it with clear wheel rattle can spray. It will cover up a multitude of mistakes.

So I painted several coats of paint on icebox door and every time there’d be 2-4 spots that would collect debris like a magnet!!! I’d wet sand it down with 1000 grit and it still would look horrid. But I think I’ve finally figured it out!!!👍🏼👍🏼 Can says spray 12-18” away from whatever you’re painting....BUT Due to our low humidity...that doesn’t work. Paint is drying too quickly. I tried 6”....still too far away. So I just tried 3”! That’s CLOSE! It’s a fine line between 3” and dripping!!! Im praying this last coat will be IT!!! Fingers crossed!!! I also went a different direction with the paint... Will c!
