I gutted the air fitting on the fill and also loosened the cap when it was in use. Worked, but the owner lost the caps a couple of times...
1/2 inch would be a good size if you can figure out how to do it. Since the tank is no longer pressurized, maybe you can drill and tap for the vent fitting.

I was thinking 3/8ths to 1/2" as well - but thinking it through - I'm now wondering how tricky trying to tap that size hole & thread would be on a curved surface (should have mentioned my tank is a tube with rounded ends...). I might tap a couple/few small tire valve size holes instead of one larger one. Based on your experience it sounds like that amount of venting would probably work.

Might also be possible to find a vented fill cap. That would allow enough air to enter through the existing fill tube without having to tap into the tank at all.
