Just read this post and brought to mind rally prizes. What catagory ? Best original , best restored, best remanufactured ? Several trailer threads here are actually trailers that have been remanufactured. Very few original parts. Should these be in the same catagory ? Beautiful work, but are they an original or original looking? I attended a rally on Arizona where a fantastic trailer won best of show but the owner stated the only original parts were 4 window parts. EVERYTHING else was bought or made by hand in the build, Including a new built frame. I'm totally satisfied when people see my original (repaired) trailer with original skin and say "nice" what year is it and where did you get it ? Does anyone have any advice on HOW to clean my stove???

If you're just talking about the rust, I usually scrub with vinegar and a wire brush until you get to metal. You can prime and paint with heatproof enamel. I just got mine sanitary and left it alone since you can't see it. Just read this post and brought to mind rally prizes. What catagory ? Best original , best restored, best remanufactured ? Thanks!!! You’re first person to give me that advice!!! Appreciate it! Did you take pieces apart to scrub or leave them attached and clean?

Most of my screws were rusted in place. I took off what I could and worked around what I couldnt. There are some real artisans on here and then there are low rent hackers like me...you have to find your balance and what works for your personality. I only see the flaws in my trailer but anyone that looks inside seems to only see that golden glow of a type of camper many don't see anymore. Thanks!!! You’re first person to give me that advice!!! Appreciate it! Did you take pieces apart to scrub or leave them attached and clean?

violamomof4, your camper is really coming together nicely. I love the rounded cabinets. I also like your lean-to.
Don't believe dan when he says this... "there are low rent hackers like me..." He does beautiful work and gives excellent advice you can trust. Although he needs your covered parking.
Come on Dan, take that dusty wallet out, buy some lumber, and build that camper the parking spot it deserves!

I'm afraid the rallies are very much like car shows or any other organized event where there is a segment that attends seeking a prize or trophy and recognition, there are also the people that enjoy the event for what it is and meeting people who simply have the same interest.
I like seeing the over restored cars and campers but I am really drawn to the average guys or gals vintage car or camper the way they have preserved or restored it, new siding where needed or like our Shasta with pock marks from it's time being a hunting camper and hit with the occasional stray bit of buck shot from a distant hunter.
I can appreciate all the vintage campers and I believe we should go with our heart on building/ restoring our campers, I know my style is not for everybody but there is room for everyone. Danny

Thank you, and I agree, Dan, don’t sell yourself short, you do nice work. My name is Erin, BTW, & husband is David.

Danny I guess each has its good points. My brother in law being a Porsche guy sees things from a different perspective than we do...but sometimes that’s a GOOD THING! He sees things we don’t! Have any of you ever done powder coat instead of paint?

I've done a lot of powder coating on automotive parts, I powder coated the wheels and grille insert on my 32 sedan 30 years ago and it holds up excellent, i also did a lot of parts under the hood of our wagon, I haven't done anything on the camper ~ yet. Danny

Danny Wonder if powder coating would show more imperfections or would be better. Thoughts?

If your thinking about the exterior siding I believe it would be a major task and most likely very expensive, the powder coating after being sprayed on a surface has to be put in a huge oven and baked at 375 to 400 degrees.
it's not recommended but I have powder coated exhaust manifolds and the finish holds up extremely well and I wouldn't hesitate to use it on a icebox or a stove if I wanted to change color. Danny

One thing you can do is just to replace some. When we raised Hamlet ‘s roof, we initially just purchased a strip for along the top edge. We took it to several places to get estimates for painting and all of them pointed out that the poor condition of the roof where it had collapsed and the multiple bullet holes really took the keep the skin option off the table. That made us and our wallet sad, as we now had two big ticket items instead of one, but in the long run, it was the right thing to do for us.

BTW, I only have access to the front yard and the city would never let me build such a thing. Even if they did, the permit costs would be more than the trailer rebuild was. They tried to get me to remove my off street parking spot and narrow my driveway to 1 lane as cars are a bad word around here and should be hidden in the garage while we ride our bikes everywhere.
