The clothing company near my office gutted this 55 Shasta (or so they said} and replaced the interior wood with corkboard. I asked casually if they thought it was structurally sound without any cabinets and the guy towing it said "they reinforced the structure...it's all 1x framing"...gulp. every window is gooped, slopped and painted over too. I'll try and get a pic of the interior later but I sure wouldn't want to follow it on a bumpy California highway.

Awesome... they cut a second door on the street side. That has to help the structural integrity a whole lot.
Another subject entirely... is this a 55? I thought Shasta didn’t start making this style until 1958.

I think it's later than 55, maybe 59-64 or so. What does it matter? This is so sad and won't last long. Patched and patched again...

It actually looks kinda nice in the first photo. I'm sure it would look even better if you took the time to get a little further away from it... It is another case of a trailer that lost its heritage. a 55 would be jellybean-shaped, like Danny's. The canned ham Shastas were introduced in the 1958 model year. This one was built between '58 and '60...push-out Hehr front window. They used the jalousies starting in 1960. Of course, you could tell by looking at the bottom of the sink,....oh wait.... It seems to have two good things going for it. The rounded canned-ham shape is one, it seems to maintain a little of its structural strength because of the curve. Oh yeah, and the 6000 screws that were added. The second is the pretty shade of blue paiint. I'm sure that will help hold it together somewhat, too. It would sure be interesting to watch it when it does finally fly apart, both doors flapping violently in the wind....

Correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression the early Shastas up to '57 were referred to as canned ham's, the jelly bean reference is a new one on me. Danny

Sorry about the confusion, I use the terms just to distinguish the shapes. You are correct, they were canned-hams all along. They were just shaped differently starting in '58, and gave more headroom to the front top corners. The "Airflyte", "Deluxe", and a little later, the "Compact" did not exist before '58, the models were noted by their lengths...the 1500, 1400, and so on.

You won't get a lot of love putting diamond plate on a camper here, but I always thought it was fine and contemplated it to replace my pitted and torn bare aluminum lower front.
