WHO remembers the Drinking Bird also called the Dipping Duck? This bird is a small version of the very first 120 year old refrigerator. Refrigerator has a 6" round hollow ball on both ends of a pipe about 30" long. Pipe is hinged in the center, pipe goes to the bottom of the lower ball. There is a small slot cut into a refrigerator so the device can tip back and forth like the drinking bird. It starts with all the liquid in the bottom ball. You tip it over 90 degrees to get it started. Methylene chloride flows to the top gets cooled in a pan of water so liquid flows black to the bottom. Once the tiping action starts it keeps going. Liquid make bottom heavy but liquid flows back to the top making top heavy so it dips into the water cools then tip down again. Water causes pressure inside to change so liquid flows back to the bottom. Bottom 6" ball inside the refrigerator gets very cold cooling the refrigerator. With a little experimenting you can build a camping refrigerator. Methylene chloride is paint stripper you can buy it at the paint store Walmart has the best price. You don't need, propane or electric to DRY CAMP. Build yourself a DRY CAMPING refrigerator. Watch video.

This sounds intriguing, I do remember the birds. Do you have anything more technically detailed to help us understand just how this might work?

I finally found the ice ball refrigerator online. This is not the ice ball version I was looking for but it works better.
You need to steel balls strong enough to hold 250 psi. You can make your own ice ball refrigerator using 2 pieces of 6" diameter steel pipe 6" long. Weld a steel plate over both ends of each steel pipe to make 2 tanks. Cut a 1" diameter hole in 1 end of each tank then weld a 1 1/4" pipe coupling over each hole. Screw a 2" pipe nipple and 90 degree elbow onto each tank. Screw a 4" long pipe onto each elbow. Screw both 4" pipes into a 1 1/2" gate valve or ball valve. 1 tank needs a 3/8" fill hole on top and 3/8" drain hole on bottom. Cut a 3/8" pipe coupling in 1/2 weld each 1/2 over the 2 holes, fill hole and drain hole. Plug the bottom drain hole then pour in 1 quart bottle of 5% laundry ammonia and plug the hole. Heat the tank with ammonia with a small flame from a candle it will take about 1 hour for ammonia to leave the laundry ammonia tank and go over to the empty tank where it cools and becomes pure 100% anhydrous ammonia. Close the valve in the pipe between the 2 tanks. Drain the tank that had laundry ammonia then refill it with more 5% laundry ammonia. Open valve and heat laundry ammonia until ammonia vapor goes into the other tank and becomes liquid ammonia. Close valve. Do this 20 times with 20 bottles of laundry ammonia you want 1/2 a tank of anhydrous ammonia. Do NOT drain out the water in the tank from the last bottle of laundry ammonia. Anhydrous ammonia is very hygroscopic it will evaporate and slowly move back to the tank that is slightly less than 1/2 full of water this will take about 24 hours. The tank full of anhydrous ammonia needs to be inside the refrigerator it will cool to 27 degrees F. Every 24 hours the tank with water & ammonia needs to be heated with a small flame from a candle for about 90 minutes so ammonia evaporates and moves to the other tank that is inside the refrigerator. After removing the candle cool the hot tank with water this will start the ammonia evaporation process so the refrigerator stays cold. The ice ball refrigerator came with a fuel oil burner to heat the ball it was designed to burn 1 cup of fuel oil in 90 minutes. At the camp ground a small pan if hot charcoal from the camp fire might work just a well as the fuel oil burner.
It would be nice to have a pipe plug sight glass in the middle of the anhydrous ammonia tank so you can see when the tank if full while heating tank on the other end.
