Ohio's ash forests were hit quite awhile ago. Here in Marietta, a city of trees, the state has ordered removal of all ash trees so now are parks are barren. Only upside is that cut ash wood cannot be shipped out of state so local company that makes ash garden tool handles (shovels, rakes, etc) have plenty of stock in logs and no competition.

Or a sign of things that have been here for a while and will no doubt get worse. With any luck/foresight, towns, cities, provinces and states will make sure that wood from the cut trees can be used for other purposes once the beetles are killed. And maybe preemptive cutting will delay the spread. Fingers crossed and saying prayers for wisdom of those with the power to make decisions.

In central Canada where I live we wrap the trunks of our trees with some kind of chemical sticky thing that looks a bit like insulation. It keeps the critters from getting up the trees. It has saved many trees in our city. Perhaps this species can get past it or they don’t know about the option.
